At Wingatui on Saturday morning several ef tho horses engaged at the Oamaru .lockey Club’s meeting, which will take place inis ■week, were out at their work. _ Most ot tho work took place on the inside grass track, next to the plough gallop. Greencloth beat the Balboa _ gelding. Bowline, over five furlongs in Imin 7sec. Good as Gold oantored a circuit on the course, and was allowed to come along at a strong pace over tho final couple of furQuickform was travelling better than Karitane and PrJF at tho end of six furlongs in Imin IS.'cc. Dumblane, withoct being bustled, .reeled off half-a-mile in 53s°c from a leisurely start. . , Eliminator was travelling better tna.n Valves at the end of five furlongs m Innn A Gay Lad filly in G. Feikler’s stable beat Controversy over half a-inile in 53sec. Miss Winkio did steady work, but docs Dot seem to be too sound. Radiant Knight beat Killorne over a smart half-mile in 51 2-s?cc. . Overhaul was going more pleasingly than Wingatui at the end of seven furlongs, covered in Imin 32scc. Bnghthng began with them but faded away in tho straight. Lochella, Scion, Beauty Lignt, and Coastguard set out for schooling work over tno hurdles. Lochella out-jumped the others nt the first flight, but at the next dropped his rider through being allowed to take ©ft - about a length too soon. Beauty Light set tho pace and led tho way over tour flights. He was then joined by Coastguard over the next two. Scion dropped back after crossing four hurdles. Lochella afterwards jumped two flights and has evidently a retentive memory as he jumped in c, style reminiscent of his brilliancy over a steeplechase course. I'elonv drew away from Strongbird towards tho end of five furlongs covered m Imin sscc. , , . Busy Lad shaped well when running half-a-mile in 52sec. Dismantle was always travelling freer than Rob over haif-a mile in 50 2-ssec—a smart gallop. . . . Roil Glad, still mn.us iron, required 52 2 ssec to cove half-a-mile, and . was allowed to continue over another circuit at half pace. Hildoth beat Ilurdy Gurdy ever half-a-mile in 51 2-ssoc, and 800.-tcr was always going better than Apple Highton when galloping together over five furlongs, which they cast behind in Imin o 2-ssec. Neither of thorn was fu.ly exHard Prince was schooled over two flights of hurdles with W. Cooper in the saddle, and gave a good exhibition. Decision led Top Goar and a Tractor gelding over five fences m a schooling lesson, and each of the tno gave a satisfactory display. . Several others got through unimportant There was again a considerable difference in the going at Wingatui on Saturday morning between about 7.50 and 9.00. At' the earlier hour the grass was heavily charged with dew, and so maoe the going slow. A couple of hours later an ordinary horse could spin out a sprint faster than a good one worked in tho early part of the morning. . , , Tho Paper Money—Michael® filly was on the track on Saturday morning She is a compactly-built little laay, and just the sort to show early speed. , A good list of nominations was received in connection with the Southland Racing Club's meeting. The field in the Southland Cup is, however, rather disappointing in both quality and numbers, and some owners and trainers say that the cost ot starting a horse is too big in comparison with tho value of the stakes. Very satisfactory acceptances have been received for tho Otautau meeting, which will take place on Wednesday. Apparently the proximity to the Oamaru meeting has not affected the southern fixture but still they should be kept a little further apart on 'the calender. Owners have made a good response to "the Beaumont programme and the meeting, with a holiday date in its favour, is likely to prove a record success for the club. Kawini is one of the most likely sorts to win over country, if bo stands a pre-

working well and may seen at* his best during the Auckland Easter 111 Civility has been working well, but neverthless was allowed to drop out of her engagements at Trentham. Eulalie still has plenty of speed, but commenced to stop at the cud of six iur~ longs in tho North Island Challenge Graining won the North Island Challenge Stakes on each occasion under a 141 b penalty. , , Desert Gold will bo represented at the Sydney sales by her first colt in a son of Psychology. Her first four were fillies. Priiie Otto holds tho reputation of being one of the speediest horses in J. T. Jamieson’s stable. . Gothic’s Newmarket victory with 9.1 U started a. discussion in Australia as to how tho present-day sprinters compared with those of old. Comparisons for many reasons are impossible (says “Touchstone ), chiefly booause of tho change in conchtions. Recalling past glories, it is possible to name 25 horses who have as rqal claims to fame. Soultine is the only horse to bavo won tho Newmarket with more weight than Gothic. The New Zealandbred horn© carried 9.11, and, like Gothic, he had a hard struggle to win, beating the pony Dunolly on tho post. Soultline afterwards gained fame in India. The Newmarket Handicap was an amazing race, and ended in an amazing victory for Gothic (writes “Cardigan”). Rarely have wo seen such a splendid performance in any sprint race, and very rarely have we seen so much interference in an important handicap. Somo horses run about when racing up tho straight, and there were several on Saturday that altoied their course on more than ono occasion with disastrous results to those who happened to be near them. Another factor that causes interference in races up the straight is the desire of tho riders of horses drawn in tho centre of the coupe to swing towards tho outside rails, with the result that the loss speedy, animals who are drawn close to tho outside fence pro squeezed out. At the start Gothic was drawn alongside Lady Thrill (No. 25 -—extreme outside) and Back Duchess, but that filly started closer in towards the inside rail, and Avant Courier was closest to Gothic when the barrier rose. , From tho stands it appeared as if Gothic was interfered with when, the barrier rose, as be immediately lost his place, and when he was seen again ho was running nearer tho centre of tho course, with at least six or eight horses on tho outside of him. He 'was at this stage a long way back, and while it is impossible to say with any degree of accuracy it appeared as if very few other runners were behind him. Three .furlongs from homo the trouble started. Gothic was sandwiched between two other runners I think thev were Quintus and Black Duchess, and Pike had to stand up in the saddle and pull Gothic up on his haunches. He was so far out of the race .at this stage that his chance looked absolutely hopeless, as both Chrystal and Margaux were croing great guns on the inside rails, and Thracian Belle had shot away from the bunch on tho outside centre, and looked very much like a winner. Two furlongs from home Thracian Bel] had headed Chrystal and Margaux, with the rest of tho field some distance off. Gothic then shot through tho beaten horses, and, although a furlong and a-haif from the pest, he was still two lengths behind Thracian Bell. Pike rode him with such vigour, and ho responded with such cameness, that he g.H alongside that mare a few yards from the post and just boat her. Success seems to, be giving T. Green Over-confidence in his horsemsnsbip. He

recently won easily by a head after riding a very confident race. One of those days ho may, as a result of over-confidence, find himself second. Although Mr J. Whitworth did not form a high opinion of the horses ho saw racing, one thing that did impress him very favourably during his recent stay in Now Zealand was the way tho Wellington Racing Club conducted its affairs (writes “Pilot” in tho Sydney Referee). You could not help being impressed by the good management, was Randwick trainer J. Whitworfli’s comment relative to tho meeting of tho Wellington Racing Club he attended when recently in New Zealand. From first to last everything went smoothly. It seemed strange there should ho no judge’s box, but tho judge, Mr W. P. Russell, sits in the corner of the official stand, and is a long way from the horses. Ills decisions are accepted without demur, and when ho gave a dead-heat Iretween three horses there was not a dissenting voice. The starting was first class, aml Air O’Connor was seen at his best when he chose to make walk-up starts. He stands about 20 vards_ in front of tho horses, and the barrier is released from an electric cord by pressure of a button. He has two assistants on tho ground, and they lead up refractory horses. I was not taken with the false rail. To my mind it come out much too far. _ Half tho width it covers would be sufficient. _ The Trcntham course is good, and, with a background of troo-covorod hills, field glasses are almost unnecessary. The club saddle cloths are different from ours, being white on black. It causes the numbers to stand right out. and must greatly help the judges. The ramps at tho buck of tho stand are a <yroat idea. You sfet to the top of the stands with far less fatigue than with tho stairway principle. It makes it much easier for the stand occupants to get down nml back again, if. at tho last moment, they wish to go into the paddock. A. large number invariably remain seated from the time one race is decided until tho horse? are paraded for tho next. Few bet until they see the horses. Mr Whitworth. whose opinion as a practical racing man is worthy of consideration, holds tho opinion that bookmakers should be allowed to bet in conjunction with tho totahsaior. TROTTING. FIXTURES. A three-year-old gelding by Tarairo from Red Cross' lias been named Ariki Toa. He is in A. G. Wilson’s stable. E. C. M'Dermott is handling a pacer by Denver Huon and a mare by Logan Pointer from a Potereta dam, who is a half sister to Willie Lincoln. F. H. Gibson has placed Bob Logan in D. Greenhorn’s stable. Grc-cnhorn came from Scotland a few years ago. where be followed his profession as a trainer of trotters and pacers. Sonoma Star is the first of Sonoma. Harvester’s stock to win. Sonoma Harvester holds a trial record of 2min as a trotter.

It is just 20 years ago since Mr H. F. Nicoll missed the Thompson Handicap by next-to-nothing. In 1906 Sea King carried his colours to « deadlock with Sunbonnet. He took Sea King and Cross Battery to Australia, and the latter subsequently became the dam of Artilleryman, one of tho best three-year-olds ever seen in Australia. Mr Nicoll nowadays confines his attention to tho light harness sport._ Native Queen, who won tlje Wainoni Handicap, is another pacer who was a bred by the late Mr U. Shadbolt. She is by Native King (a great trotter) from Rawone, and she possesses plenty of speed. For seme time, says an exchange, she was unreliable at tho barrier, but now she is a good beginner. She is owned by Mr H. W. Aker, and was driven by his son. Native Queen will always, be dangerous over short courses.

The American stallion Guy Parish has been leased by Mr J. O’Brien, and will become a studmate of the very successful sire Nelson Bingen. Guy Parish is a brother to Orion Guy, who holds a record of Imin 59ijsec, so that there is a, wealth of soced in tho family. Guy Parish is by Guy* Axworthy (2min BJscc), and was imported in 1924.

The Abbey, winner of the Ladies Bracelet and Stewards’ Handicap at the Manawatu fixture, is owned and trained by Bert Adams, the Now Plymouth enthusiast, who received the gelding as a gift from a Waikato sportsman. The Abbey was bred in the Auckland district, and is an aged gelding by Gold Bell from Tho Abbess, a Grattan Abbey mare. He was for some time, says an Auckland paper, under the care of the well-known trainer, G. Cameron, but the gelding failed to make good on the race track when tried as a three-year-old. Later, it is stated, Tho Abbey was sold for 30s, and he was afterwards bought by Mr Whitehead, a Waikato light-harness enthusiast, for £9. Some time back, when A. E. Adams was visiting tho Auckland Province, the Waikato sportsman offered to make a present of Tho Abbey to the New Plymouth trainer,' but the latter was not keen on accepting the offer, and went south again without the gift horse. Later, however, Adams was that a horse had arrived by steamer at New Plymouth consigned to him, and on going tp take delivery he found that the donor had oven paid the freight on the pacer, so he had no option but to accept the free horse. Having The Abbey on his hands, Adams thought the next best thing to do was to put the Gold Bell gelding m work. Accordingly The Abbey was placed on the active list. Evidently Adams found the ex-Auokalnder showing promise, and he was accorded a nomination for the Manawatu fixture, which ho visited, and won a double. So after all the unwanted R ift horse has turned out a fine payab-o monerty for tho New Plymouth ownci, and judging by tho manner in which -he son of Gold Bell won his races at Asuhurst ho will prove a substantial gift for Adams before he finishes ree £; F G. Holmes was called before the stewards to explain his driving of Swittbine on the .first day of the New Brighton meeting in the Autumn Handicap. Tho Australian-bred trotter Western Voyage showed speed when raced at New Brighton, but his condition was hardly satisfactory. He may do better when more seasoned. Jean M’Elwyin is regarded as one of tho best bred mares in the country, one w r as got by Nelson Bingen from Miss .Spier, from Peter the Great. _ . In a report to the Trotting Association the Timaru Trotting Club stated that at its recent meeting an inquiry had been held into interference by Daphne de Uro with Author Jinks in the limaru Cup. The club had decided to reverse the placings of Daphne de Oro and Author Jinks, who had finished second and third respectively. The president stated that it was a most remarkable decision to arrive at. The club had penalised tho owner of Daphne de Oro and the public who had hacked her, yet the driver was allowed to go scot free. The action of the club in the alteration of the placings was adopted, and at a later part of the proceedings it was decided to call F. G. Holmes beiore the Licensing Committee to . show cause why his license should not be cancelled, the committee to report to the next meeting of the board. It was also decided to ask the club if there were sufficient grounds to necessitate the alteration of the placings why' no action was taken in regard to Holmes. At the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s meeting the inspector of cruelty to animals laid a complaint against A. T. Newdick, the driver of First Carbine, for undue use of the whip. For that offence Newdick was fined 12. At a recent meeting of the Trotting Association, Mr Williams said it was rather strange that the laying of the complaint should have been left to the inspector instead of the stipendiary steward taking action. Newdick, in his evidence to the club, stated that First Carbine had refused to budge along the back stretch, and he had occasion to use the whip. He was a lazy horse and thinskinned, and easily marked. Newdick did not consider that ho had unduly thrashed ' the horse. Mr _ Kitchingham stated that the undue thrashing of a horse should be put down with a strong hand. It seemed to him that harness racing could be conducted without the unnecessary punishment of horses. It was decided to endorse the action of the Otahuhu Club, but to increase the fine to £5 as an indication of the board’s disapproval of such treatment of horses by drivers.

NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to Datlx Fiuks.) WELLINGTON, March 17,

One of the finest day’s racing ever seen at Trentham featured the closing day ox the autumn meeting to-day. ihe track was very fast. Star Stranger received a wonderful reception on winning the Gold Cup. His effort was that ot a super horse, and hie time was better by -Asec than the Australian and New Zealand record previously held jointly bv Kennaquhair, Windbag, and Spearfelt. Star Stranger also holds a similar record for 11 furlongs, established at Trentham in tho Autumn Handicap. The club had a very successful day, the totnlisator increase being nearly five figures for the day and well over that for the meeting. j Bright Day was a sound favourite for the opening event from Laueer and Uralla. Nucleus again proved herself the best of the field, and had too strong a finishing run for the remainder. Bright Day, however, was unlucky, as his rider lost an iron at a critical stage of the race about two furlongs from homo. Clavers and Lancer both ran well, and the others had no chance. - Duke Abbey was a sound favourite for the Hutt Handicap. He made all the running, but White Fang took the lead and led into tho straight, where Crown Area was prominent. Crown Area won by a head from Vcrtigern, who came on the rails and beat Duke Abbey by two lengths. Don Jose was a similar distance further back fourth, with Cerf, Damaris, and Alyson right up. The result was a surprise, as it was confidently expected that Duke Abbey would hold his stable mate Crown Area safe, although Awapuni track watchers were aware that he had a reasonably good chance if he would run reliably, ’which he has not always done lately. Duke Abbey ran a good race, but was beaten at the finish not only by Crown Area, who raced up to his capabilities, but also by Yertigern, who ran a very good race. Don Jose was always prominent and ran very creditably. Dajnaris stumbled and nearly, fall five and

a-half furlongs from home, and caused trouble which brought about the fall of Tiega, R. Reed luckily escaping with a shaking:. Corf and Alyson ran fair races, and White Fang looked all over a winner as they ran into the straight, but he failed to finish on.

Rapier was over £6OO a better favourite for the Trentham Gold Cup than Star Stranger. There was a moderate amount of money for Satrap. Satrap led all the way and sot a fast piace, the first mile being covered in Imin 41sec. Rapier and Star Stranger set off after Satrap six furlongs from home and as they ran past the half-mile post they had reduced Satrap’s load to about six lengths. Rapier was beaten a furlong further on, but Star Stranger -was running strongly after the loader, and Satrap had a good lead at the false rail, but Star Stranger was gradually overhauling him. Uue hundred yards from the post Satrap was weakening, and a little further on Star Stranger was up alongside him, boating him homo by three parts of a lengths amidst a scene of great enthusiasm. Rapier was four lengths away third. Wild pigeon was beaten off. It was a great race, and in winning in 3min 22-isec Star Stranger not only rose to great heights as a racehorse but he also established an Australian and New Zealand record. It was the effort of a champion to overhaul Satrap, who was really going well at ail stages of the race. Satrap has made great and his race was that of high ('.'ass three-year-old. Rapier was beaten three furlongs from homo and Wild Pigeon never had a chance. Discourse was the favourite for the Hack Mile, but Talisker, Keddar and Court Jester wore all well backed. They were well balanced all the way with Vigilance leading. Spearmiss shot out ICOyds from homo and was str-ongly challenged by Talisker. He failed, however, to got up by a short neck. Two lengths further back Court Jester was just showing out from Discourse with Fair Exchange and Wild Work next. It was an excellent race, with very little in it until the finish, when Spearmiss and Talisker assorted themselves. Talisker ran a_ good race under his big weight, and coming from the rear of the field, he was overhauling Spearmiss very fast. There was not more than four lengths between the first and last horses. Mithra was a pronounced favourite for the two-year-old handicap from Miss Ransom, with Episode very well hacked. Episode and Prickles led all the way. Episode winning by a length, Prickels being three lengths ahead of Mithra,. with Miss Ransom dose up, and then came Moorgas, Knightlike and Briar Root. Episode outclassed her field and won all the way, putting up a first class performance. Prickles ran an excellent race and beat the others very comfortably, although she had no chance with Episode, who was conceding 291 b. Mithra and Miss Ransom ran up to their first day’s form, but were not good enough, and none of the others were ever dangerous. Hynanna was the favourite for the Autumn Handicap, but he did not receive much more support than Set Sail. Orotrix was the best backed of the otheis, none of whom was at all ncgelcted. When they had settled down Joy Bird was in charge from Sat Sail and Great Charter, closely followed by Tresham and Oratrix, the rear being brought up by LauMiing Prince and Black Mint. Whe they got into the straight Set Sail took the load and a furlong from home was clear. Over the last 160yds Tresham got to Set Sail, followed by Hynanna on the rails. Then Laughing Prince flashed up on the outside. A splendid finish &aw Laughing Prince get up in time to beat Tresham by a bead, with Black Mint a short neck away third, and j-xynanna was close up fourth. Set Sail was a couple of lengths further back, followed by Joy Bird, Oratrix, and Great Charter. It was a groat race, the issue being in doubt right up till the final strides. The best horse on the day won, and no won like a good one. Coming from the rear of the field with an irresistible run Tresham ran an excellent race, but was not quite good enough to win. Black Mint was a trifle unlucky. He got _ squeezed out at the start and was covering a 1 01 of extra ground in the running. With a bit of luck it looked as if ho would have been very hard to beat. The weight stopped Set Sail and Hynanna, who both ran good races. Great Charter was beaten at the end of a mile and a-quartor, and Joy Bird also gave in. Oratrix was not good enough. She was well placed at the false rail, but could not come on. Cimabue was the. favourite for the open sprint from Shirley and Money Order, but it was a great race. Running for the srramght, Limited, Sudden Storm, Shirley and Money Order were prominent. All the’ bunch was handy, there being very little between first and last. In a _ great race home first Lysander looked like a winner and then Bright Glow, Cimabue, and Broad Acre made runs. Bright Glow finishing best to win by a length from Cimabue, who beat Broad Acre by a similar margin. Lysander was fourth, and then came Arrow Lad, Silver Coot. Limited and Money Order wer© last. Bright Glow won well and decisively in the finish. Cimabue ran a great race under his big weight. He began well, but Reed eased him in the middle stages of the race, and he eamo again strongly at the finish. Broad Acre ran a much improved race on his first clay s running, and Lysander was again prominent mid responsible for a creditable performance. Shirley, Limited, and Money Order all failed after having the best of the running in the half-mile, and the others were not good enough. . . Quantum wias a &übstartfcial fayount© ? n the concluding event. Subdivision again endeavoured to lead all the way, and was in front till the last stride, when_ King Midas got up and headed him. Mendip was half a length away. Mendip was very unlucky as ho got a poor start, but he fimsheu very fast. Ramesis again showed great speed, and was close up fourth. Nothing else had a chance.

AUTUMN MEETING CONCLUDED. COLLEEN POINTER WINS CHIEF EVENT. (Sx’kciai- to Dailx Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, March .18. The autumn meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club was concluded in fine weather, following on heavy rain overnight and -a dull morning. The attendance was much larger than on Thursday, and this was rebooted in the total investments. The totalisator handled £24,022 10s, compared with £28,685 10s on the corresponding day two years ago, and £42 346 last year, when tho Royal meeting was’ held at Addington, The total investments for the meeting amounted to £39,593, against £49,171 in 1920, and £67,563 at tfe Royal meeting last year. Tho course was heavy on account of the rain, and the times were slow, but tho racing was excellent, some of the contests being very exciting. High water mark was reached in the Flying Handicap, in which the field was bunched right up to the post, while there was another great struggle among the unhoppled trotters m tho Brooklyn Handicap. . There was one regrettable incident during the day. The Eclipse Handicap, won by Free Advice, with Baron Bingen second, was followed by an inquiry into a charge against J. Bryce, tho driver of Free Advfoe, for interfering with Baron Bingen at the home turn. Tho stewards were satisfied that there had been intorefcvencc, and that it was wilful. They therefore decided to reverse the positions of tho pair, placing Baron Bingen first ajid Free Advice second. In addition, J. Bryce was fined £25. The owners of Free Advice lodged an appeal. The dividends were paid out in accordance with the stewards’ decision. Baron Bingen is tho three-year-old brother to Great Bingen. It was his first race, and he is going to tako high honours. Free Advice, who is owned in Auckland, but trained here by J. Bryce, is by Blue Mountain King from Intaglio, and sister to Onyx, and she is a speedy pacer likely to win lots of races.
