MATCH AGAINST WANGANUI. HOME TEAM OUTCLASSED. (I’m United Press Association.! WANGANUI, March 18. Resuming with three wickets down _ for 230 in reply to Wanganui’s first innings of 83, the Australian cricketers put up a total of 428 on Saturday, and sent Wanganui iu for its second strike. The local team made a better showing than on Friday, hut was dismissed for 132, the visitors winning tho match by an innings and 213 runs. ponsford’a 101 made on Friday remained the top score of the match, Grimmett (73) being the nearest approach. Schneider made 64 by dashing cricket. The Wanganui bowlers found themselves against a hard task when tho match was resumed, the visitors’ wide range of strokes worrying them, .but the fielding was good, tho fieldsmen accounting for four wickets. Jackson and Grinimett provided crisp strokes that delighted the spectators. Kippax received an ovation on going to the | crease, but was Ibw off the first ball. 1 Oxenham came on and slammed several halls to the boundary, but was clean bowled at 27. Grimmett skied one from Holland to Harris just after the luncheon adjournment. Alexander partnered Morton, who replaced Oxenham. and tho scoring slowed down. The remaining batsmen did not show anything spectacular, and tho innings closed for 423. Nino bowlers were used by visitors in Wanganui’s second attempt, Wood being tho only man to Inst long. Rountree (Auckland), who were selected to represent New Zealand against the Australians at Auckland on Saturday nest, have notified the selectors that they are uow not available and their places have been filled by R. Read (Canterbury) and J. E. Mills (Auckland). Originally Mills was not available for selection. Now that Rountree has dropped out of the team T. C. Lowry (Hawke’a Bay) will be tho wicket-keeper. (Peh United Press Association.} GISBORNE, March 17. In the Kirk Cup challenge cricket mutch, played here yesterday and to-day, Poverty Bav defeated Hawke’s Bay (the holders) by an innings and 46 runs, scoring 259 against 83 and 118. The outstanding feature of the game was the last-wicket partnership for Poverty Bay, J. Jennings (SO) and L. Thomson (74 not out), adding 140—a record for the last wicket in local representative games. The batting of the visitors was ’poor, except that of Beck, who top scored in both innings with 10 an 1 52. AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. (E’er United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, March 18. Tho final of the senior competition was commenced at Eden Park yesterday, between Eden and Ponsonby. The latter team has a two points lead, and Eden has to win tho match outright for tho championship. Eden hatting all afternoon scored 253 for eight wickets. The partnership between .Whelan and Bennett added 102 runs for the eighth wicket, the pair being still unbeaten at slumps. Chief scorers were Whelan (72 not cut), Cooper (48), A. F. Weir (41), Bennett (31 not out), Smith was tho mont successful bowler for Ponsonby, securing three wickets for 60 runs. Y.M.C.A. make 97 against University, which replied with 127 for three wickets. Kelly compiled 41, and Goo 44 not out. For University Garrard took three wickets i for six runs. United Suburbs scored 146 (Kerr 40) against Grafton, which replied with 110 mins for no wickets (Webster 52 not out, lloispool 52 not out). For Graftou Hoispool took four wickets for 23 runs.
