BOXING
BOUT AT SYDNEY STADIUM. PURDY OUTPOINTS JONES. {Press Association—Rs TelcgrapU—Copyright) SYDNEY, March 12. (Received March 12, at 5.5 p.m.) At the Stadium, Pin’dy (9.8&) outpointed Jones (9.6|) in. a 15-round contest for the light-weight championship of New Zealand and Australia. Jones attacked aggressively over the early rounds, scoring rights to tne body. The New Zealander, boxing cleanly, attacked with both hands to the head and the body, and secured a majority of points until the tenth round, when he appeared to tire. Jones then forced the fighting, winning the next few rounds by a slight margin of points. Purdy’s eye was badly gashed as a result of a collision of heada in the fourteenth, giving Jones the advantage in the concluding round, but the New Zealander had a sufficient margin in his favour to win the title comfortably.
BOUT IN MELBOURNE. GILLESPIE BEATS BARBER. MELBOURNE. March 11. (Received March 11, at 5.5 p.m.) At the Stadium, Norm. Gillespie defeated Tommy Barber by a knockout in the tenth round of a contest for the feather•weight championship of Australia and New Zealand. Gillespie led throughout. This fight .would hold special interest for local followers of boxing, for the *W| Rpher are Under 'contract to the Otago Boxing Association to meet Tommy Griffiths and Johnny Leckie in Dunedin.
