THE AMERICAN NAVY
CONGRESSMAN’S PREDICTION. REPLACEMENT PROGRAMME. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.) WASHINGTON, February 19. (Received Feb. 20, at 7.5 p.m.) Mr F. A. Britten, a member of Congress, predicts that the House Naval Affairs Committee will agree on a replacement building programme. He says the Bill will probably provide _ for 25 cruisers to replace 22 obsolete ships, five aircraft carriers, and 35 submarines, all to be completed by 1936. “ The programme before us,” be says, “ is almost entirely one of replacement. 1 believe our annual denpsea commerce of 20,000,000,000d0l fully justifies the precautions which this programme will provide.” Mr Britttcn points out that the Bill will not provide for destroyer leaders, but the Navy Department may later request appropriations for nine such vessels.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
