NEW YORK UNEMPLOYED
A SERIOUS SITUATION. ACTION BY THE GOVERNOR. CPruMi Association—Hj Telegraph—Copyright.) NEW YORK, February 19. (Received Feb. 20, at 7.50 p.m.) Upon the report of the Industrial Commissioner, Governor Smith took steps to relievo the unemployment situation. He advised county supervisors to speed up public works and thus provide more jobsThe Governor also issued orders that members of Cabinet should sten State buildings and construction projects. The report stated that the conditions in New York State are worse than at any time since 1921.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
The Labour Bureau Group of Statistical Research Workers, connected with the labour unions in New York, announced an estimate of 4.000,000 persons unemployed in the United States, or 10 oer cent, of those gainfully employed. The bureau claimed that the situation was serious, and merited investigation. Ihe figure bad no official authorisation, but it is interesting to note that Governor Smith has begun an investigation of the unem ployed situation covering the whole of New York State.
