Lincoln Huon, Royal Serene 36. THE OAMARU RACE DATES. to the editor. Sxb —ln the issue of your paper of the 15th inst. there appeared a letter over the signature of Mr William Gardiner, president of the Oamaru Jockey Club, refei-ring to a paragraph appearing in a sporting paper which he stated was chcta In' the B first place, that statement is entirely without any foundation whatever Mr Gardiner also states that Otautau 'Club has chopped and changed on every occasion. Surely Mr Gardiner must know that that statement is not correct. Otautau Club has raced consistently tor years on the Wednesday previous to the Southland Racing Club’s autumn date, thereby making the Eafeter circuit with the Southland and Riverton meetings. Last year the chib had to abandon its date on the morning of the date set down for the race meeting and select another date later in the season owing to boisterous weather conditions. Surely Mr Gardiner docs hot suggest the club was at fault on that occasion. th regard to the paragraph mentioned by Mr Gardiner, it was apparently contributed by “W. A.,” who could not have been actuated by any motive other than to injure tho Otautau Club in writing it. I never at any time made any such statement to “ W. A.” or any other person as is contained in that paragraph. Neither has any owner nor trainer in Southland mentioned to mo that he intended to boycott the Oamaru meeting or that he did not intend to nominate to show his displeasure at Oamaru being allowed to race at Wingatui. If Mr Garcliper has such confidence in “ W. A.” as to believe what ha has written, would be be sportsmanlike enough to inquire whether I made a similar statement to any other person. Surely “W. A.” would not he the only person in whom I would confide if I had such news to broadcast.
The paragraph was not written to assist the Oamaru Club, but evidently to discredit the Otautau Club, and is a most unjust and unwarranted reflection on the owners and trainers of Southland. I discussed the matter with only one InvErcai gill trainer, and he gave it as his opinion that most of the Southland horses would remain in Southland for the Easter circuit to avoid the excessive amount ot travelling which would be entailed to race at the Oamaru meeting, as it was clearly evident that the greater number of Southland horses would not race at both Otautau and Oamaru meetings and complete the Southland Easter circuit as well. 1 therefore ask Mr Gardiner to withdraw the statement that the paragraph in question waa dictated by me
or otherwise to prove what he says. I can assure him that I have too high an opinion of the Southland owners and trainers to think that they would condescend to boycott the Oamaru Club or any other sporting body.—l am, etc., M. O’Brien, President Otantau Racing Club. Otautuu, February 19.
