OTAGO MOTOR CLUB.
HILL-CLIMBING CONTESTS. The old North road in Bothune's Gul'y is an excellent competing ground lor motor cyclists. Its steep grade and awkurd corners provide a severe lest—everything is in its favour, except that now and again a ■.tray cow get in tho way or die farm dog wanders iazily across the road and threatens to upset the cyclist. Thu public appreciates cycle contests and u largo crowd assembled at tho starting point on Saturday. At the finishing point there was another crowd, and at both points uie people were supplied with information as to tlio progress of events. Tho officer in charge of mo megaphone at tho lower end performed a useful duty in disseminating his information far and wide. The Boy Scouts kept tho crowd in check and, by means ot flags, signalled from point to point to keep the road clour for tho competitors. It was a humble duty, but very necessary, and it was honorably discharged. The numerous contestants wore sent otf with ns much expedition as possible, anci when it is slated that no fewer than bi starts were effected within three hours, u will be conceded generally that the arrangements left nothing to bo desired. Thu contestants helped the officials coming to tho starting-point promptly. The electrical timing apparatus did not work very sucot ly, ami its failure necessitated re runs in three or four cases, Eight com pctilors came south irom Timnru. Their presence added interest to the contests, and it is pleasing to know that they did not return north without some trophies of victory. Not a few supporters came with (hem from their, homo town and from intermediate stations. The road on wmch tho contests took place was in good order, though at one part, known as the “cowbyre,’' is was wot and slippery. Six members of the St. John Ambulance Association were present. Fortunately, their services were not called for, except in tho case of one man who fell from his machine and cut his lip and bruised his face slightly. There were no motor car events. Last year there were several, but this year owing' to lack of entries, it was decided to eliminate them. It was a wise decision. Tho crowd had plenty of fun and any commit of excitement for one day, and at the close of the programme it was voted an exceedingly interesting afternoon. An energetic collector sold programmes and collected spare coins, and his persuasive appeals did not go unanswered. Iho officials for the day were: Starter, Mr a. E. Ansell; sucevintendonts. Messrs A. W. Slier riff and 'S. MTniics; time-keepers— Messrs G. W. Shorriff, T. Scott. J. L. Passmore, and D. M. Lister; Awards Committee —Messrs A. D. Ansell, A. Mfthernff, S.
