ST. CLAIR CARNIVAL.
COMPLETE SUCCESS RECORDED. On Saturday afternoon Dunedin laid aside its work for the week, forgot its petty worries, and set off for St. Clair. There was nothing half-hearted about this migration; trams were packed all day long, and vehicles of every other description, crowded with happy people, moved rapidly towards the beach. In the evening they came in still greater numbers, and it was estimated that the attendance for the closing session of the St. Clair carnival was in the region of 20,000. The state of the finances __ goes to support this contention, for Mr F. H. Dampen reported yesterday that the funds of tlie St. Clair Improvement Society have benefited to the extent of over £I7OO as the result of the whole effort. Rain fell for a little while during Saturday evening, hut the success of the affair was by no moans disturbed, as the bcacli and esplanade, were packed with people who were in the sort of mood that makes light of a few raindrops. Fancy dress was the order of the evening, and the revellers enjoyed thoinselves to the utmost, assisted bv lively band music, and later the professional fooling of George Wallace and his Princess Theatre Revue Company, who willingly lent a hand. In the afternoon a successful baby show of mammoth dimensions was held, and 14 bathing beauties displayed their charms before an intrigued and enthusiastic audience. Tlie amusement section was in full swing throughout, and no fewer than 2800 enthusiasts, old and young, trotted up and down the beach on the ponies.
