CONVERSION OF A CAR.

THREE MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT. “A MENACE TO THE COMMUNITY” (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND. February 16. A sentence of three months’ imprisonment was passed in the Police Court today on Henry John Thackwell, aged 41, who was charged with converting to his own use a motor car valued at £l5O, the property of L. S. Maxwell and Co. On two further charges of obtaining liquor during the currency of a prohibition order, and of failing to produce his driver’s license when called upon, the accused was convicted and discharged. Ail the charges 'were admitted. Senior Sergeant Gumming said that the car had been left in Hobson street about 4 p.m. on the previous afternoon. The owner had not locked it, and when he returned shortly before 4.30 he found that it was missing. Later in the evening the owner of the car and a constable saw the car travelling along Mount Albert road at a fast rate. The two gave chase, and overtook the accused as ho was enter* ing a shop. “The accused is really a danger to the community,” added the senior sergeant, producing the accused’s list, which included convictions for theft and false pretences.

“ I know what to do with him,” remarked the magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M.), in passing a sentence of three months’ imprisonment.
