BREAKING OF THE DROUGHT.
WELCOME RAIN IN THE NORTH. (Fur United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, February 15. The longest spell of dry weather experienced in Wellington for 40 years ended on Tuesday night with a welcome downpour of rain. This was the first appreciable fall for just over six weeks. Up till 9 a.m. to-day the rainfall measured 56 points, which was nearly double that for the whole of January. It was expected that the total fall to-day would reach 40 points, as compared with a total of 19 points for the whole of January. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 15. The dry spell experienced since the end of December was broken early this morning by heavy rain, which still continues and apparently extends over a wide area of North Taranaki. The town water supply and electric light and power were causing anxiety, which is now removed, while the dairy farmers will be greatly relieved, the milk production having fallen seriously during the last week or two. BLENHEIM. February 15. During the night beneficial rain fell throughout Marlborough, breaking the three months’ drought. Ove.r 80 points were recorded in three hours. The weather is still overcast, with slight showers, and the farmers are overjoyed.
