A FINE ESTABLISHMENT.

HUGH GOURLEY, LTD., CLARK STREET. In business in Dunedin for nearly 60 years—such is the record of Hugh Gourley, Ltd., of Clark street. Dunedin has always been famed for firmly-established businesses, , which have been controlled by several generations of the same family, and Hugh Gourley, Ltd., is in the category. The firm was founded as far back as 1870 by the late Hugh Gourley, afterwards the Hon. H. Gourley—one of the most publicspirited men that Dunedin has possessed. On the demise of Mr Gourley in 1907, the business was carried on by his sons James and Hugh, and subsequent to the death of those gentlemen the management came into the hands of the next generation—Messrs Cuthbert, Hugh, and James, who are in control of affairs to-day. The passage of the years has naturally called for a number of changes in the firm’s premises, and in the manner in which their services as funeral directors are offered to the public. The most important alteration is the erection of an extensive and handsome two-storey brick building in Clark street on the site of the original premises, and a feature of the new structure, and an innovation in Dunedin, is the provision of a suitably-furnished chapel, which may be used for that portion of the burial service which is generally conducted in a. private house. So often in these days of flats and rooms, it is inconvenient to hold this service in a home, and the chapel, which has ample seating accommodation, will supply a felt want. The now premises also include a Large workshop office rooms for the staff, and accommodation for a night attendant, so that the public may communicate with the firm at any hour, day or night. The entrance to the yard was off Maclaggan street in the old days, but this has been altered, and vehicles now enter the yard off Clark street. j ■
