■. i i ■ ■ ■ " (From Our Own Correspondent.) T A PANE I, February 11. RACING CLUB'S MEETING. Mr T. Edgar presided over a meeting of stewards of the Tapanni Racing dull mi Tuesday evening. Liters were received from Alosfii s It. A Pierce and E. Moore with reference to the handicapping for t'h 0 TCoerit inoe meeting. —It was resolved that both be thanked for their services in getting the club out of its difficulty, and that a fee be forwarded to Mr Pierce. The Secretary of the Racing Coniet-em-o forwarded an extract from tae stipendiary steward’s report on the recent meeting, which stated «that the race track was rough in several places,anectin.the number of horses starting, and the attendance of the public, and mitigating amiinst the success of the meeting. It was agreed that a renly be forwarded that improvements to the track would be the first consideration before next race meeting. ■ , , , , The Secretary submitted a rough ha - anee sheet of the recent meeting, which showed a credit balance of £o7, which was considered very satisfactory. _ On receipt of the refund to he claimed from the Government for improvements, ti,,, secretary was authorised to pay on the balance owing on loan account immediately. DR AWNING FATALITY. An inquest into the circumstances surrounding the death of William Stephen Maslin. who was drowned in the Pomahaka River on Monday last, was hold today before Mr W. R. Quinn, district coroner. . Evidence of identification was given by the boy’s father. Walter Henry Maslin, of Pnkerau. who said that the previous morning he motored with his wife, son, daughter, and two lady friends to Whisky Gully for a picnic. On the way a stop was made at the Ponihhaka bridge to allow the young people to have a swim The same procedure was adopted in the evening on the return journey. On this occasion his son. daughter, and the two guests went in. and after a , time witness noticed that his son was in difficulties. Witness waded in, but was unable to be of any assistance, and before any of the others could come near enough to help the boy disappeared. The deceased was only an ordinary swimmer, and had had no cxocrionce in swimming in rivers. Corroborative evidence was given by another member of the party. After Dr William Paterson, of Tapanni, and Constable Blatnires had given evidence, the Coroner returned a verdict that the deceased was accidentally drowned.
