HIGH SCHOOL BOARD. (Fno.M Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, February 15. A meeting of the South Otago High School Board last night was attended by Messrs J. D. Landels (chairman), James Guest, W. Roy, J. W. Fenton, D. Marshall, A. S. Malcolm, and Mrs Dallas. Two members were absent. The Chairman furnished a report on the work of levelling tho grounds of the school, as conducted by the Public Works Department, and it was decided that the secretary write and ask the department to have the work conmleieu before the end of March. The question of a dux medal for the school was hold ovei. The Principal (Mr John Reid) iu hu .c----port stated, inter alia, that the school opened on February. 6 with a roll of 132, which secured the retention of last year s staff Mr Scott, as science master, ami Mr Jolly, as assistant, had joined the staff The examination results were much as had been expected, save for disappointment over most erratic marking in English. In the annual report tho narrowness of the school curriculum was regretted, especially on the aesthetic side. This year Mr Scott was taking singing with the first year pupils. Miss Cross has been re engaged to leach sewing. The Principal also commented on tho lack of space, and urged the board to apply for a portable room, io obviate the use of the science room as a regular class room. Considerable discussion ensued on the lack of room and it was decided to ask the department to complete the building according to ttm original plan, which would moan truce move class rooms and an assemoiy hall. Accounts amounting to ±137 were passed for payment. _ , i Mrs Dallas and Mr Parker M’Kmlay ■were appointed a Library Committee. Ibo donors wished to he imnampd, but this gracious act enabled a most promising girl to pursue her studies. The 1 nneipal also expressed his conlidence that more bursaries would bo forthcoming.
