LAWN TENNIS

FRENCH PLAYERS IN AUSTRALIA. BRIGHT PLAY IN DOUBLES. (Press Association —By Telegraph—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, February 10. Some bright tenuis was seen in the doubles match between Borotra and Boussus and Paterson and O’Hara Wood, in which the Australian pair won 6—4, 6—2, Borotra was the outstanding player, with Wood very close behind him. Patterson had a tendency to take his drives too low, and frequently found the net. Boussus until near the end of the second set did not find his feet. He seemed nonplussed by the speed of the play, and mistimed a lot of his volleys. Boussus played on the right-hand side of the court. The Australians were not long in finding the weakness of his backhand. Patterson served consistently to that corner, and even when Boussus was able to return the delivery it was generally weak, leaving too much court open. BOROTRA BEATS PATTERSON. BOTH PLAY SUPERBLY. MELBOURNE, February 10. (Received Feb. 11, at 0.15 a.m.) The tennis tests were concluded in fine, cool weather. In the singles Brugnon beat Hopman, 6—3, 6 —o, and Borotra beat Patterson, 7—5, 7—5. In the doubles Brugnon and Bousssus beat Crawford and Hopman, 6—4, 6—l. Hopman, in the singles, was right out of form, and was repeatedly worked out of position. He never looked like winning against the Frenchman, who played at the top of his form. There was great interest in the game between Patterson and Borotra, as the two had not yet met during the tour, and it was thought that the result might gave an indication of Australia’s Davis Cup chances. Both played superb tennis, and the game wa s most hardly fought, but Pattersoh was guilty of many and finally lost the match with a double fault.
