SOUTH CANTERBURY FISHING.
(Frou Our Own Correspondent.) TEMUKA, February 10. The Kangitata River has been very low during late weeks, and is, mqreovei, very weedy, the blanket weed being the worst seen here for severa yeaxs. The trout fishing has been falling off lery much lately, though some anglers uaie been getting up to live fish on odd evenings, and these have weighed i.rom 31b up b to 51b. So far the salmon run- has not really started, and just a few odd fish have been coming ui-streani. The Orari Lagoon has been fishing taiilj well with the fly. On different evenings a-.-le.s have been getting from seven to 15 fish, an 1 these fish have been running from flh t. 241 bin weight. But practically all the fishing has been in the lowei waters. The top waters have dried up, and thousands of young fish have een wasted, while several thousa ds have been shifted into the Ohape, the nearest stream. The Tcmuka has been fishing very much better of late, aiid fishermen here have been getting eight to 14 fish of an evening, these turning the scales up to -lb. The big sea-run fish are now in the lower pools of this river. As regards the Opihi, the fishing hcie is better now with the fly, both wet and dry, than it has been for the whole season hitherto. Some anglers have been getting the limit on the evening rise, and the' fish caught have vyeighed anywhere from Alh to 21b. ihe big fly fishermen have not been doing Quite so well, but nevertheless several big Fill have been caught, turning the scales at from 641 b to 101 b. , , „ In the upper waters ot the Opihi the fly fishing in the day time has been very good, and anglers have been getting up to 12 fish. These fish have weighed from fib to 41b, while odd fish have been caught up to 741 b weight. , The Pareora, together with the Kokahu, the He te Moana, and the Orari, are all suffering from scarcity of water, ana what the rivers need throughout South Canterbury just now is a good fresh throughout the whole of them. This would serve to clear away the weeds and rubbish, and replenish tlie dry streams. ' . The Mackenzie Lakes have been fishing fairly well, and visiting anglers to Lake Alexandrine over the week-nd are reported to have caught up to 11 fish, these weighing from 441 b to 1441 b.
