RACING NEWS. FIXTURES. Feb. 11. —Dunedin J.U. Feb. 11. —Taranaki J.C. Feb. 11.—Poverty Bay Turf Club. Feb 11, 13. —Rotorua R.C. Feb. 15.—Chfden R.C. Feb. lb. —Tolaga Bay J.C. Feb. 16, 18.—Wanganui J.C. Feb. 18—Canterbury J.C. Feb. 22, 23.—Gore U.C. Feb 22, 25. Nelson J.C. Feb. 23.—Watapu R.C. Feb. 24, 25. Woodvillo District J.C. Feb 25. 27.—T0 Aroha J.C. Feb. 29, March 1-—Dannevirko R.C. D.J.C. SUMMER MEETING. Tho acceptances for the second day of the Dunedin Cup meeting must he considered as quite satisfactory. Most of tho horses missing are not on tho scene, and hence their absence is not duo to what might bo deemed unsatisfactory handicapping. Possibly there has been a rather too strict adherence to tho first day's figures, but the fact remains that all the possible acceptors seem to have been gathered for tho second day’s card. If one could predict that better use \frould be made of Satrap, the Paladin gelding would start favourite in the D.J.C. Handicap, and Arikiwai seems most likely as' tho one next in demand. Silver Coot, Sudden Storm, and Booster will probably be the order of favouritism in tho Flying Handicap. If Sudden Storm could be relied upon to begin well she would start favourite. Others likely to be backed during the day are Kapuna, King Balboa, Riii Tin Tin, Dumblane, Spearmaid, and Carinthia. There will bo no betting on the Huzlett Memorial Stakes. ’ The excellent racing provided by tho Dunedin Cup card should stimulate interest in the second day of the fixture and draw all tho possible interest to Wingatui for the second day of the meeting. Satrap should start favourite for the D.J.C. Handicap, provided that his rider can keep him out of half the trouble he got into during the race for the Dunedin Cup. , , ~ Pink Note was galloped on during the race for the Dunedin Cup and that fact will be responsible for his absence on the second day of the meeting. Mr B. S. Irwin has secured a lease of the filly bv Paper Money from Michaela, and the youngster will go into J. Fielders stable. . , . Booster stumbled when he jumped out in the Publicans’ Handicap, and so lost any chance he held in the race. The field in the hurdles to-day should be sent away from a walk-up start. If the fact was notified. Jack o Lantern would start favourite. A misprint in the tabulated list ot winners of the Champagne. Stakes yesterday showed Jericho a winner in 18sec. Jericho should have been credited with Imin 16 2-ssec. Rin Tin Tin can go very fhst for nve furlongs. He would have won the Champagne Stakes at that distance. Arikiwai and Satrap appear to be two c£ the most likely ones to fight out the fipjsh of the D.J.C. Handicap. King Balboa won nicely on the first day at Wingatui, and will probably start favourite for the Warrington Handicap to-day. - ... Silver Coot and Sudden Storm will no doubt be backed to fight out the finish of the Flying Handicap. Dumblane may be picked out as the one most likely to trouble Rin Tin Tin in the Hopeful Handicap. Spearmaid was unlucky in her race on Cup clay, and with a breakaway on even terms with the rest of the field would probably have been a winner.' Wayward will have a lot of weight off his back if started in the Abbotsford Handicap.

According to reports from the north, Paleta and Kiosk are nearly ready to reproduce their beet form. Martis is under offer at a small price to an Australian owner. At the sale of bloodstock held yesterday the top price was made by the Tractor filly Puff, who was sold to Mr S. G. Ware at 240gns. Mr C. White bought Craighmore at 40gns and the Tractor— Winsome Lady filly at 40gns. Queen Ruth. with a Balboa filly at foot, and carrying a service by Woodcnd, was sold at 45gns to Mr R. M'Donald, and a yearling brother to Puff went to Mr R. Mee. of Becks, at 50gns. Avant, Courier, the three-year-old s°n of Valais and Courante, who has the distinction of realising SSOOgns when sold as a yearling, is placed well in the limelight on that heading alone, and, as ho is the only horse that has defeated Trivalve this season, that, of course, invests his autumn form with considerable interest. There appears to be a fairly strong opinion that a 'mile journey will prove to be Avant Courier’s pet distance, and some of the critics hold the view that he will win high honours over that particular distance. 4n important race set down for decision this month in which Avant Courier is expected to play a strong part in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes, which is run over seven furlongs at weight-for-ago, with penalties and allowances.

Encouraged by tho success of American owners in tho Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, Mr Howard Bruce, of the United States is reported to have registered his colours in England and has already sent his nine-ycar-old horse Billy Barton over to be trained for the great crosscountry event to be run at Aintree next month. Billy Barton is by the French-bred stallion Iluon, opt of an American mare, May lo Bas. Huon has. sired some good jumpers, inclusive of Sir Iluon. Tho American owners, however, referred to above won tho Grand National with horses purchased in England, Mr Sanford scoring with tho Irish-bred Sergeant Murphy in 1923 and Mr Schwartz with Jack Horner, a lucky purchase he made in England in 1926. “ There is no reason,” says an English writer, “ however why Billy Barton should not win the Liverpool Grand National, for an American-bred colt (Iroquois) won the Derby as long ago as 1881, and another, Foxhall, won the Cesarewitch and the Cambridgeshire, and then secured the coveted Ascot Gold Cup in the following year, as a four-year-old.” The English trainer, Aubrey Hastings, who has been selected to put Billy Barton through his facings for the Grand National contesi, steered Prince Hatzfelt’s horse Ascetic Silver to victory in the great cross country event at Aintree in 1906. After a holiday extending over several months, Peter Maxwell has resumed work at Te Rapa under the direction of J. F. Tutchen. The Marble Arch gelding is reported to be in nice healthy condition. Peter Maxwell has done very well as a steeplechaser in the last couple of years. his victories including the Grand National Steeplechase of 1926. Two incidents of which the general public knew nothing, but which indicated an exceptional degree of interest hi the results of' the, racing on the part of some person or persons unknown, aro current topics firnonEC.'t those connected officinlly with the conduct of the Gisborne summer meeting. But for the vigilance of the chib officials last Thursday’s racing might have produced new sensations. • The first discovery was made in the early hours of the day (says an exchange), when an inspection was made of the. scales upon which the riders weigh out and weigh in. Balanced on the Imam of the scales was found a slug of sheet load, weighing about two ounces, but so placed that it exerted a leverage equivalent to a weight of 21 h m, tho seat of the machine. Thus ■ a jockev whoso weight was Bst could be qualified to ride at Bst 21b.- had the slug escaped observation. Hardly less interesting was the discovery_ that, after the course had been inspected in the morning and found to be fully prepared tor the first event of the day, the hurdle race, eom o person had ventured nn to the course, and levelled the jump at the three furlong post. The hurdles wenaffixed to standards driven well into tho ground, and were strong enough to present a good resistance to any impact but pist prior to the start of tho event the course caretaker found tho whole length of the jump do«n. The hurdles were re-erecter,. and the public knew nothing of the mci dent until lato in the day.

It is expected that the appointments of two stipendiary stewards will bo announced this week. A. Bryce has Kohara and Money Spider stepping well in their work. A success with either horse would greatly assist in establishing him as a trainer in Auckland. It is said that Logan Park contracted a cold on his return from the Forbury Park meeting and hence, will not be taken north lo fulfil engagements at tho Otahuhu meeting. Conoliff has been working well since ho won at tho Forbury Park meeting. It is a remarkable fact that in tho discussions cropping up in reference to tho Great Bingen—Native Chief match, nothing has been said about tlio luck of the draw on the rails. The draw for position may easily mean the difference between winning and losing. Logan Chief and St. Maura aro two that are regarded as likely to improve on recent form. Queen’s Own has been doing particularly good work for F. G. Holmes lately, and she will probably be one of the favourites in tho Craven Handicap to-day. It will probably be her last rare for some time to come as she is in foal. Don Derby has come on nicely since racing at tho Forbury Park meeting, and he should be one of the hardest to beat in the Juvenile Handicap to-day. He is a very promising pacer and looks sure to take a good mark later on. Saraparilla pulled out a fine turn of spe°d to win at the Forbury Park meeting, and a reproduction of that form would take him very close to the thickest end of the stake attached to the Spreydon Handicap to-day. He looks well placed’ on the limit. Ladv Embrace can run a fast mile, but does not relish a race over more ground than that. She is on the front of the Papanui Handicap to-day, but will not be in much request. . If Panto docs it right in the Liverpool Handicap to-day he will get at least a share of the stake. O. K. Hooper has him at the top of his form. . Machine Gun will probably be showing the shortest price in the Midsummer Handicap to-day. The Machine Brick gelding paced two good races at tho rorbury iaiu. meeting, and showed that he was nearly ready to win. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY. GREAT BINGEN AND NATIVE CHIEF, (Special to Daily Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 10 The summer meeting of the New Zca land Metropolitan Trotting Chib, to he held at Addington to-morrow, is arousing a lot of interest. Usually it is a very quiet fixture, but the mile match between Great Bingen and Native Chief has raised it. to much higher standard. It is a great pity that the leading clubs do not often seek similar attractions to lend variety to the monotonous round of handicaps. Tho Metropolitan Club has been fortunate on (his occasion to secure (wo star pacers, and tho match will provide great excitement. The training work if each horse has been closely watched, and has given pleasure to a largo number of enthusiasts. Opinions are very much divided as to who will succeed. Possibly Great Bingen will bo the more favoured because of his

reliability, courage and determination. It is possible that Native Chief has the greater burst of speed; in fact, it would be generally acknowledged that ho is the fastest pacer ever scon in tho Dominion, but ho is moody, unreliable, and not possessed of too much stamina. When thoroughly extended and going at a twominute to the mile clip Native. Chief s action is so perfect that his work is effortless. No pacer has ever been known in tho Dominion to travel so fast and witii so little effort. Tho onlooker does not realise tho speed ho is showing unless he is opposed to other horses or is going against the watch. It is to be hoped that Native Chief is in a generous mood to-morrow and that he gives of his best in the contest, There is no doubt about Great Bingen’s stamina. lie is a bulldog to race, and will fight out a finish to tho bitter end. The match, therefore, will be between a solid, reliable, honest pacer and a moodv, irresponsible speed merchant, who may or may not give of his best in the race. Tho handicap races should provide good sport, but tho match will be tho great attraction

The report of the Forbury Park Club Committee stated that it had ruled, and still held, that no appeal lav, as the question was one of fact. This contention was upheld by the association, and the action of the club was endorser!. Holmes applied for permission to attend race meetings during his term of disqualification, but this perniisison was refused. The following horses in which Holmes has an interest were automatically disqualified:—Roy de Oro, Eugene do Oro, Bonny Logan. Admiral Pointer, El Carbine, Trix Pointer.
