MARSHAL JOFFRE

OBLIGED TO LEAVE APARTMENT. RENT TO BE DOUBLED. (Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ) PARIS, January 31. (Received Feb. 1, at 5.i5 p.m.) The announcement that Marshal Joffre will be obliged to give up his apartment because the rent is about to be doubled caused a storm of protest, despite the offer of a generous Spaniard, who says that he would be honoured to provide the marshal with adequate premises. Marshal Joffre, being iver 70, could legally claim the right to remain, and the landlord would be powerless, 1 ut he prefers to leave. An indignant newspaper says that while the nation prepares a place in the Pantheon for great men, no attempt is made worthily to house them before death.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
