The provision of better facilities for assisting backward school children in the city is to bjL- aimed at by a committee which has been set up by the Auckland Education Board. The committee, whiU' will submit a report to the board, will consist of the principal of the Training College, the headmaster of the Normal School, the senioit inspector, and the advisory inspector of schools. The Chairman of the board (Mr A. Burns) said his attention had recently been drawn to the case of a backward child which had, on reaching the age of 14 years, been asked to leave the Myers Kindergarten to make room for younger children. He considered that further provision for such children might be advisable. Mrs N. E. Ferner raised the question of the sub-normal child, for whom she said the board was not responsible. Mr Burns said that if any need arose the board would attend to sub-normal children as well. Mr T. U. Wells said that the nearest institution for the care of sub-normal children was in Otago, and he said that a similar school was needed in the northern part of the Dominion.
