WANAKA NOTES.

(From Ora Own Correspondent.) PEMBROKE, January 31. THE WEATHER. Favoured, by continued fine weathef farmers have made good progress with stacking, and the greater part of the grain is safely gathered in. The stacking ot barley at Mount Barker is completed, and the fields ot wheat there will be threshed from the stock. Mr J. Gillespie’s threshing plant commences the season at Mount Barker during the week. Like progress has been made at Hawes and Maungawere, and, except with the slower, ripening crops on heavy. land, little remains to be done. Reports indicate that wheat crops generally are well up to the average, and that the barley yield also, much better than was anticipated; For the past few days the sky ha« been overcast, but there is little indication yet of the early and heavy rainfall which is so greatly needed to freshen the pasture# and bring the turnip crops away. <r BRIDGE BUILDING. The initial arrangements in connection with the building of bridges over tha Hawea and Clutha Rivers are now com--pleted, and it is hoped that the successful tenderers for the work will be able tocommence in the late autumn months. At the last meeting of the Vincent County Council it was decided to call tenders for the construction of a bridge over the Hawea at Camp Hill, and for another oyer the Clutha. The third, bridge pro! vided for in the programme will be erected at the’main crossing of the Lower Lindis. The erection of the two bridges over the Hawea and Clutha will eliminate the prer sent ferry crossing at Albert Town, ani will mark a distinct advance in the pro-, gress of the Upper Clutha. The hope isf strongly held that the construction of the Central line to Luggate will be commenced® when the Roxburgh, extension is early in the year. Not onl ywould this work absorb a . large, number of . unemployed, but it would also be of immense, benefit to the settlers near the lakes and to the country generally by encouraging production and reducing the cost or transport. ANGLING, . - Except for the- doings of various parties of anglers near the head of Lake Wanaka fishing activities during the week leave little to report. Trolling from Makarorftwharf to Mount Albert, Mr M'Millan was successful in taking several rainbow trout and three salmon. The heaviest fish taken weighed 61b. In Glendhn Bay Mr A. Humphrey has been consistently successful with the rod all through the fishingseason.
