A cheque signed bv Abraham Lincoln, which is believed to bear one of the rarest of his autographs in the hands of collectors, has been discovered by Mr Thomas F. Maddigan. a New York autograph dealer. The cheque is dated Apiil 13, 1855, the day before Mr Lincoln’s assassination. It is drawn on the. First National Bank of Washington, oayahle to “ Self,” in the amount of £l6O. and signed with the characteristic signature, “A. Lincoln.” Although the cheque is cancelled, it is understood to have been purchased by the dealer at a price several hundred dollars in advance of its original face value. Cheques signed by the famous President are exceptionally rare, because after being honoured by the hank they were returned and later destroyed.
