DR A. W. HILL.
DEPARTURE FOR WELLINGTON. YISIT TO PRIVATE GARDENS. Dr A. W. Hill, director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, left by the express for the north yesterday morning. Prior to his departure, Dr Hill, in company with Mr Tannock, Mr George Simpson,' jun., Mr J. S. Thomson, and Mr W. A. Thomson, visited several private collections of native plants—Sir George. Fenwick’s garden, Mr .J. S. Thomson’s, Mr W .A. Thomson’s, Mr Simpson’s, and Dr Hunter’s. At the close of the visits, Dr Hill said he was very keenly appreciative of the work that wag being done in studying th e natural hybrids which appeared to occur in the New Zealand flora, particularly among the veronicas, the olearias, and the celmesias. He added that, in his opinion. Dunedin was ideally suited in every way for the purposes of a national garden for native flora. Dr Hill will not stay in Christchurch, and should reach Wellington this morning.
