LIFE-SAVING COMPETITIONS. LYALL BAY WINS NELSON SHIELD FOUR-MAN EVENT TO CANTERBURY. With the exception of the heats of the Men’s 220 Yards Breaststroke Championship, no events in the national swimming championships were swum off yesterday, the day being given over end rely to the Royal Life-saving Society’s Nelson Shield and Four-men Surf Competitions at St. Clair. Although the weather was anythingjmt favourable in the morning, it was decided to go on with the land drill and land resuscitation work. The following teams competed: Lyall Bay.—S. Muller (captain), J. Hill', N. Dickson, J. Cameron, T. Ryan, B. MTvor, J. Mollier, and J. Blakeley. Canterbury.—F. S. Taylor (captain), A. F. Dalton, C. R. Riordan. D. P. Lindsay, 11. M. Eaglesome, A. T. Bolam, J. M! ’Bales, and C. Atkinson. Maranui. —E. Hughes (captain), D. J. Murrell, C. C. Clariclge, C. B. Eversleigh, J. F. Alexander, Y. Fletcher, J. Whisker, and G. Easte. The work in the morning was well and smartly carried out by the three teams, and the almost military precision of the drill of the two Wellington clubs was the subject of much favourable comment by the spectators, of whom there were a fair number present. The Canterbury team also performed well, but there appeared to be a lack of “snap” in the movements. The afternoon was devoted to the Nelson Shield contest, and by 2.30 the esplanade and the beach in the vicinity were thronged with onlookers, wtm_ followed every run out with the keenest interest. Lyall Bay went first, and from the time the first whistle went until the patient was finally resuscitated, every member of the team went through his work like a machine. The combination between the reelman and the linesman was noticeably good, and at no time did the beltman appear to be hindered in the slightest. The Canterbury beltman seemed to be in difficulties during part of his swim, and on his trip to the beach there was by no means perfect combination between his reelman and lineman, with the result that he was not able to give of his best. This was unfortunate, for the team, as the support man, D. P. Lindsay, made splendid time to the patient. Maranui’s run out was smart, but again the movements lacked the dash and precision of those of Lyall Bay. The evening session, when the fourman surf competition was held, attracted another huge crowd, and, as in the afternoon, some splendid waterwork was witnessed. Four clubs entered two teams each. They were as follow: —Lyall Bay No. 1; J. Cameron, S. Muller, W. Griffen, B. MTvor. Lyall Bay No. 2: R. Thomas, J. Blakeley, N. Dickson, J. Hill. Maranui No. 1: E. Hughes, D. Murrell, C. B. Eversleigh, J. Whisker. Maranui No. 2; V. Fletcher, C. Claridge, J. F. Alexander, G. Easte. Canterbury No. 1: C. Atkinson, A. T. Dalton, H. M. Eaglesome. C. Smith. Canterbury No. 2: A. T Bolam, C. R. Riordan, F. S. Taylor, H, G. Smith. St. Clair No. 1: C. J. M'Lean, J. Swan, B. Haig, J. Lewis. St. Clair No. 2: H. Devlin, A. Harrod, C. Lewis, J. Simpson. After a keen contest, the winning team proved to be Canterbury A, the beltman of the team, C. Atkinson, who made fastest time to the buoy, taking the beltman’s championship. J. Simpson, St. Clair B, was runner-up. The following are the results: — NELSON SHIELD. Lyall Bay (Wellington), 163 points .. 1 Maranui (Wellington), 157 J points .. 2 Canterbury, 144 points 3 FOUR-MAN SURF CHAMPIONSHIP. Canterbury A, 91 points .. 1 Maranui (A, 90 1-3 points .. 2 St. Clair B, 84 2-3 points .. 3 THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. Yesterday was an off day for visiting swimmers, the only events decided being the heats of the 220 Men’s Breaststroke Championship. The results were as follow; — 220 YARDS MEN’S BREASTSTROKE CHAMPIONSHIP. Holder of title: E. C. Heard (Canterbury). New Zealand fresh water record, 3min 4 4-ssec, E. C. Heard (Canterbury). First heat: E. C. Heard (Canterbury) I, H. Clark (Otago) 2. Also started: R. Affleck and A. Harrod (Otago). Heard led all the way and won easily by four yards. Time, Smin 24sec. Second heat: N. K. Sylow (Auckland) 1, L. Smith (Wanganui) 2. Also started: L. Pithie (Otago). Sylow and Smith swam level for the greater part of the distance, but at the last turn Sylow went away with a slight lead, which he just maintained to win by a touch. Time, 3min 11 2-ssec. The final of this race will be decided this evening, but unfortunately the holder of the title, E. C. Heard, will not be able to defend it, as, acting under medical ■advice, he will not swim again during the meeting. To-night’s programme, however, will be an especially interesting one, as it will include the Men’s and Ladies’ National Diving Championships in which such well-known divers as R. Calder, J. Hicks, Miss Hood, Miss Copplestone, and M. Walker will compete. Another event which is sure to create more than ordinary interest will be the 100 Yards Intelmediate Boys’ Championship in which W Cameron, the young Wellington sprint champion, is expected to return a particularly fast time. ANNETTE KELLERMAN CUP. The Annette Kellerman Cup race will be swum off on the harbour to-morrow morning. If the day is calm , the race will start from the cross wharf at 10 o’clock, and the competitors will swim round a mark a mile and a-half down the harbour and back. In the event of the weather being rough, the competitors will leave the wharf at 10 o’clock by launch and will be conveyed to a point three miles down the harbour, whence they will swim back to the wharf. The following launches will follow the race:—Mr J. T. Paul’s Aotea, Mr Cahill’s Nell, Mr Robinson’s Marewa, and Mr Davy’s Eureka, and in addition a dinghy will accompany each swimmer.

The following handicaps have been declared for the race:—E. J. Webster (Auckland) scr, J. Enwright (Auckland) limin, C. J. E. M‘Lean (Otago) 2imin, T. Champion (Canterbury) 4min~ J.
