The Canopus, having finished annual overhaul, left Port Chalmers yesterday for Westport, where she loads for Auckland. The trawler Taratahi arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday from Bluff for cleaning and painting in dry dock. This vessel was previously one of the Norwegian Star whale chasers. She has been acquired by Bluff owners to be used for oyster and other fishing. The Waikouaitl was delayed In working cargo at Bluff on Monday and yesterday owing to heavy rain. She la expected to arrive at Dunedin this afternoon. The vessel has a large quantity of general freight from Newcastle and Sydney for discharge The Kurow, which has been delayed at Bluff owing to rain, is now expected at Dunedin on Friday to load general cargo for Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. The Waipiata is to leave Auckland tomorrow with general cargo and Island fruit for discharge at Lyttelton and Dunedin. The Port Caroline, which has been delayed at Bluff on account of rain, is now expected a; Port Chalmers on Friday to commence Homeward loading. „ The Opihi is due at Dunedin about Saturday from Westport with a cargo of coal. She will load general merchandise early next week for Tlmaru and Westport. The Progress is expected at Dunedin on January 30 from northern ports to load general cargo for Wellington, New Plymouth, and Port Waikato. The Calm, which was delayed at Bluff on Monday, is now due at Dunedin to-day. She will load general cargo to-morrow for iimaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton and WanganlThe Breeze i s due at this port on Sunday from northern ports, and will load cargo on Monday for Tlmaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Wanganui. The Northumberland arrived at Aew Plymouth on Monday morning from Bluff to continue loading for London. She is due at Auckland on February 16. ~ , , The steamer Port Hardy, which sailed from Auckland on December 16 for New lork, Boston, Halifax, and London, is reported te have .reached New York on January 17. The Union Company’s Island steamer Waipahi arrived at Newcastle on Friday from Auckland. The vessel was to leave Sydney yesterday with general cargo for Fiji. From FIJI she will return with fruit to Auckland. The steamer Tairoa, at present loading at Wellington, will leave that port to-day ior Napier t* complete loading. She will sail finally from Napier on February 1 for London, via Panama. The American steamer Grace Dollar, which visited Sydney- last year with a cargo of lumber and case oil, has been so d to Japanese buyers. THE MELBOURNE STEAMER. The Manuka, from Melbourne, Is to leave Wellington this afternoon for Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due here on Friday morning, and la timed to sail on Friday evening for Bluff and Melbourne. CYDONIA FROM MONTREAL. The Cydonia is due at Dunedin about Friday from Montreal, via northern ports, to discharge a quantity of Canadian cargo. The vessel will proceed thence to Sydney and Melbourne to complete discharge. THE CANADIAN GHAI/LENGER. The Canadian Challenger is due at Auckland on February 8 from Halifax, via Panam«. She is bringing Canadian cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Bluff, Dunedin, Timaru, and Lyttelton, in that order. The vessel is expected at this port about February 19. CARGO PROM EAST CANADA. The Ikala arrived at Sydney (Cape Breton) on January 18 to continue loading for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, New Plymouth, Sydney, and Melbourne. The veseell will also load at St. John. STEAMER ANGLO-EGYPTIAN SOLD. Advice received in Sydney last week states that Messrs V. T. Thomson and Arnell, London, have Just sold the steamer AngloEgyptlan, built at Sunderland In 1912. about 9000 tons d.w„ and fitted with quadruple engines, at a price stated to be about £ll 500. She was owned by the Nitrate Producers’ S.S. Company, Ltd., of London, and has been sold to Finns. An arrival at Dunedin yesterday morning was the Canadian Prospector, from Montreal and Sydney (Cape Breton), via Panama and north New Zealand ports. The vessel was berthed at the Victoria wharf to discharge a quantity of Canadian merchandise and load products. The Canadian Prospector loaded general freight at Montreal, consisting mainly of rolls of newsprint, motors, and motor accessories, and sailed on November 25. A call was made at Sydney (C. 8.). where steel goods were loaded, and the steamer sailed finally from Canada, on November 30, and cleared Panama on December 12. On December 27 a stop for a short period was made off Pitcairn Island. The voyage was uneventful. Captain A. Thomas is in command and has with him the following officers:—Chief. Mr N. Wilson bas relieved Mr C. Burgess as chief officer of the Waihemo, the latter having been granted holidays. Mr L. Sinclair, second officer of the Kamona, has been granted holidays, and his place has been taken by Mr R. B. Dymock. Captain A. T. Toten, late of Oonah, is awaiting instructions at Sydney. Mr B. A.» Buckingham, chief officer of the Oonah. has relieved Mr E. A. Stein, chief officer of the Loongana for holidays Mr O. Sharpe has relieved Mr A. Russell as chief officer of the R.M.S. Makura. Mr Russell is taking holidays at Auckland. Mr W. A. Todd is now second officer of the R.M.S. Makura, having relieved Mr A. R. Champion for holidays. Mr R. B. Steere, third officer of the Kaponga, is on holidays at Sydney, his place being taken by Mr V. Miller, late of the Gorinna, and Mr I. L. Russell has transferred to this vessel from the Wnipori. Mr T. Stevenson has relieved Mr L. A. Englith as third officer of the Waipahi. The latter officer is taking leave to sit for his certificate in Sydney. —■■■ CAPTAIN H. STRONG RETIRES. When the Union-Castle liner Carnarvon Castle arrived in England last month, her commander, Captain H. Strong, 8.D., R.N.B. commodore of the company’s fleet, passed into well-earned retirement after 48 yea: s' service on the sea. After two years’ training In the Worcester and other seafaring experience, during which he gained his mate’s certificate, he joined the Union Line in 1987 as fourth officer of the Tartar. From that ship he passed to the Moor, the Arab, the Trojan, the Mexican, and the Scot, until in 1899 he was given command of the Kaika in the intermediate service His first mail command was the Carisbrooke Castle, and since then he has commanded the Saxon, the Armadale Castle, the Edinburgh Castle, the Windsor Castle, and. lastly, the Carnarvon Castle. Captain Strong is a Younger Brother of Trinity House, a member of the Company of Master Mariners and a member of the London Committee of the Missions to Seamen. He will be succeeded by Captain W. F. Stanley, of the Windsor Castle, and he gave up the post of commodore on November 16, his birthday.
