Feb. 29, March 1. —Dannevirko R.C. The Wellington meeting will be con eluded to-day. Paganelli, the winner of the Wellington Stakes, has the reputation of not being genuine in a hard contest. There is no question about his brilliancy, however, and after being first out of the barrier he was never headed. Ho had a pull in the weights, as he did not carry a penalty, while the best of the two-year-olds all had extra burdens on account of successes earlier in the season.

Consent, who filled second place in the Fitzherbert Handicap and ran third in the Nursery Handicap, is a very promising youngster by Acre. He may never reach top class, but he looks sure to win races. Golden Armour ran a good race in the ’Wellington Stakes and is generally regarded as a maiden that will soon gallop to a win.

L'p to the end of last season Kilbroney’s etock had won close on iTD.OOOsovs in stakes.

Airtight the winner of the Trentham High-weight Handicap, is a useful Taranaki hack who stays well. He comes from a jumping family, and he may be seen to advantage over hurdles later in the season. The Eclipse Stakes, run annually at San’down Park in July, furnishes a good illustration of a big stake being provided by horse owners, vv-no thus practically race for their own money. The added money only eniounts to £ISOO. and it is computed that the value of this year’s race will be £12,981. During last month the Dunedin sportsman Mr J. M. Samson, bought Wayward, a three-year-old gelding by Sutala from Egotism, from Mr G. D. Greenwood. As Wayward had finished unplaced in the three races in which he carried Mr Greenwood’s colours it is safe to assume that the price was no a big one. He must now stand as a very cheap horse, as he has won four race's, including the valuable Douro Cup, and he has earned place money in two others. H. Nurse i s keeping Rapier at steady tasks at present. He has no immediate engagements', so there is no need to bustle him. and he is in such good order, a s a result of the work he did earlier in the reason, that he can he at his best again with a few fast gallops. He may have bis next race in the Trentham Gold Cup. Countersign wag a long way from the leaders over the first half of the journey in the Wellington Cup, but put in some good work over the last couple of furlongs, and finished right up with the fourth horse. She should be worth watching at meetings ahead, Limerick is bowling along very freely in sprinting tasks. He will have a race in the Hazlett Memorial Plato at the Dunedin meeting next month, by which time Jic should be at his best, and he will then be shipped to Sydney, in search of more weight-for-age honours. It will be no surprise if he is a better horse on this trip than at any previous stage of his career. Starshootcr, a two-year-old brother T 0 iStarflight, by Archery from Stardance. has been gettinrg though a lot of useful work lately. He may be a member of G. Murray Aynslcy’s team for Wingatm, where he has an engagement in the Dunedin Champagne Stakes. , Too much use was made of Wayward in chasing the speedy Lady Limond in the Apprentices' Plate on Saturday, and ho was unable to finish on. , , Centrepiece has developed trouble whicn has necessitated veterinary attention, anti he has been thrown out of work for the present. It is a form of paralysis, affecting one of his legs, and a good spell will be necessary, even if it develops imo nothing more serious.

June 2, 4.—Canterbury Park T.C. June 9. —Ashburton T.C. June 23, 27.—Auckland T.C. Yesterday’s rain was just sufficient to take a little of the fire out of the Foybury track, and providing the weather holds from new on the going will probably be better than it has ever been. The special train bringing the Canterbury horses is timed to arrive at 5.15 p.m. tomorrow.

Firebrand has speed enough to win from the mark he is on in the Southland Handicap. but there is no guarantee that he will move away at the right gait. When he won at the Forbury Park meeting, O. E. Hooper drove a very confident race, and it looks as though a second or two could havo been chipped from the time. All Peters goes well for about a mile, but then begins to climb in the air. Drake is among the regular workers at iForbury Park, but ho is not showing the speed that would make him a winner from the mark he is on in the Southland Handicap. He appears to have lost all form eince coming down this way. Diamond Child is pacing well in her work, and in Christchurch she is one of the earily for the Flying Handicap, in which she is on the limit. Queen’s General is in capital condition, and if there was any guarantee that she would r* away the public would have no difficulty in locating the favourite for the Electric Handicap. At the spring meeting she had the race. won a long way from home and paced right away from the field in the run to the post. A. M'Lellan has Desert Star m capital condition, and the sturdy chestnut should race prominently this week. He is in the Electric and the Flying, but the latter should suit him better than the saddle event. He is very fast out of the tapes. Cannonball was in the boom af the New Zealand Cup meeting, but he has not been doing well since then, and according .to northern reports he will have to improve on his recent showings to have a chance in the Otago Cup Handicap. Blue Thorpe has an ungainly gait, but it gets him over tho ground, as he proved by winning over a mile at Timaru last season at a 2.16 gait. He is, however, a bad breaker, and does not appeal as likely to win the Otago Cup for the second time in succession. Locanda General, who is in the same stable as Logan Holme, is coming right and it will be no surprise to find him stepping into the money this week. He goes well in saddle. . Sea Queen is steadying down for F. G. Holmes, and she has been doing work that would win a trotters’ race from the mark she is on. Terence Dillon looks well and will step out a very fit horse for his engagements this week. _ , Warepa won well at the For bury Park spring meeting, but he appears to be in his place in the Southland Handicap. Kelson M'Elwyn, for one. seems to hold him safe at a difference of 12yds. Acceptances for the Cheviot meeting close on Saturday night. Concliff and Logan Park, two of tho fancied candidates for thtf Dunedin Cup, wo rcsgonsiblo for a good work-out at

Addjngton ou Saturday over two miles. Both pacers went without a mistake and finished well in fair time. Mr T. Ritchie has two promising youngsters by Petereta in work at Forbury Park. One is from Swiftest and the other from Swift, who has produced such good trotters at Swiftwood, Swiftbine, and Peter Swift.

SATISFACTORY FIELDS. (From Our Special Reporter.) WELLINGTON", February 24. The acceptances for the concluding day of the Wellington Cup meeting are satisfactory, as the hard going has been rather trying on several horses raced during the earlier part of the fixture. If First Sight could be relied upon to behave himself at the barrier he would carrv support for the Wallaceville Handicap. Greengrocer and Histone may be selected ns the best of the others in the Arikiwai will probably start favourite for the Kelburn Handicap. The luck of the draw may have a bearing on the betting in the Hopeful Stakes, and a trio that may be amongst the chief selections are Concentrate, Full Feather, and Flicker. The Swell and Spean Bridge are amongst those likely to find support for the Melrose Handicap. , Paperchase, Set Sail, and Lady Limoncl will probably be selected as most likely to fill the places in the Summer Handicap. Overhaul and Oratrix were both unlucky in their race on the second day, and‘the fact will help to bring them into favour for the Consolation Handicap. Crown Area, The Hawk, and Money Order may be the order of favouritism for the City Handicap, and Imitation and Solgele are both likely to be fancied to trouble the best engaged in the Kaitone Handicap. GISBORNE REHANDICAPS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 24. For the Railway Handicap at the Gisborne summer meeting, Dreamy has been rehandicapped at 7.7. HAWKE’S BAY TROTS. BLOODSTOCK SALES. RECORD PRICE FOR LIMOND YEARLING. (From Oue Special Reporter.) WELLINGTON, January 24. There was a large attendance at the second annual sale of bloodstock held at Trentham in connection with the Wellington Cup meeting. A very large catalogue was submitted, and the opening of the sale was marked by a record price for New Zealand being made when the Limond— Hoage colt Tent was sold at 2300gns. The youngster is a chestnut colt with four white stockings and a blaze, and in appearance strongly reminds one of a relation in Humbug, except that he shows a harder colour. He is a wellfinished colt, of good size and quality, and the only objection that could be found consists in the fact that his colour and markings suggest that he has thrown to the Absurd strain in his pedigree rather than to that of the sire. The AbsurdRose Queen filly also topped the 1000guinea mark, but the youngster that looked the bargain of the sale was the Tea Tray—Taiamai colt, which sold at 600gns. He would probably have made more impression but for the fact that it was useless to measure purses with the buyer. The following were the principal sales: On account of G.
