CENTRAL OTAGO. NASEBY NOTES.
(From Odr Own Correspondent.) NASEBY, January 24. BOWLING. Four rinks of bowlers from Ranfurly visited tho local green on Saturday and played a friendly game, which the home club won. The weather was fine and very hot, but all enjoyed the game, especially as there has been little real play this season. Following are rinks an<i scores (Ranfurly names first): —Jones, E. Pnngle, Wilson, Smith 13. Smith, Whiston, Inder, Brenmer 23; Spence, Cooper, Friend, Bandy 13, Flynn, Lloyd, Foots, Vaughan 23; Cambridge, Lobb, Bell, M'Cowatt 18, Button, Graham, T. Foreman, More 10; Grawtford, M‘Lean, , Davis Newman, , Templeton 18, Totals: Ranfurlv 60, Naseby 74. CRICKET. The Waipiata Club paid a visit to Naseby on Saturday to meet the local men, who proved the winners. Scores: Waipiata, »1 first innings, 78 second innings; Naseby, 103 first innings, 133 for five, second mnmgS‘ GENERAL. A party of local enthusiasts one evening last week caught nine eels in Wcdderburn Creek, tho largest weighing 15ilb. The weather has been hot and seasonable for the past two or three weeks, with heavy dews at night. Light warm showers fell on Monday intervals. The Borough Council at a special meeting last week appointed Saturday afternoon as tho weekly half-holiday. Although a petition signed by the majority of tradesmen was presented asking that Thursday bo appointed, the council rejected the request- As it is therefore Saturday will remain, although several shops already obtain execution and observe Thursday. A good deal of dissatisfacton exists regarding the Commonage. _ Although a. committe is in existence, it is doubtful if it has met for the last three years. There has certainly been no annual meeting for three years, and while many pay to register cattle, others get off without paving, and /no one\ seenis to know or accept any responsibility. A-. number ot residents have applied for small Potions of tho commonage to be cut oft, but tne only reply to applications received is that the Commonage Committee objects, although this committee does not meet, home use the commonage to run a dairy farm, without paying rates or taxes, while others who rent small reserves have to pay_ Owners adjoining the commonage have to fence off and frequently complain ot broken fences, while commonage cattle roam the streets and roads at, large, a menace to traffic. Apparently the Mayor was recently asked to convene a meeting, but later he reported to the Borough Conn oil that it was not a matter for it to deal with. It seems inexplicable that the council which is supposed to represent the people should decline any responsibility or initiative. Repeated warnings by the council to prosecute owners of wandering cattle are disregarded, and lately the streets have been occupied by cattle wan dering at large.
