(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 20. 4n Italian, Cation Cavallaro, who arrived in the Dominion a year ago, was fined £3 for being in possession ot an automatic pistol and ammunition, which were not registered. Counsel explained that non-registration was due to ignorance of the laws of the country. The weapon and cartridges were brought into the country by Cavallaro, and not declared' to the Customs officials. . Twice previously adjourned because ot the non-appearance of the_ accused, the case against William Higgins of having sold half a bottle of whisky in a nolicense district was proceeded with this morning at Ashburton. When the case was first called on November 22 the magistrate (Mr C. R. Orr Walker) issued a warrant for the accused’s arrest. There was no appearance of Higgins to-day, and a fine of £25 was imposed, in default two months’ imprisonment.
