DICK WHITTINGTON.
The Dick Whittington of our fairy talc was actually quite a well-known historical character, better known in official circles as Sir Richard. He went to London from Gloucester to be an apprentice, and was so successful that he amassed fabulous wealth, was four times Lord Mayor of London, and member of Parliament for the city. Henry had borrowed large sums from him for his French wars, and had recently increased his debt by expenses in connection with his marriage to Princess Catharine of France. Sir Richard gave a banquet in honour of the royal couple, a brilliant affair in that age of fantastic costumes and sumptuous feasting. At the conclusion he craved permission to offer his wedding present. He clapped his hands, and a page entered with a tray load of parchment bonds. Sir Richard flung them on the logs that blazed on the open hearth in the centre of the hall. The King was free of debt.
