PROPOSED REDUCTION. CHIEF OF STAFF SURPRISED. (Press Association— By Telegraph—Oopyngnt LONDON, January lb, (Received Jan.* 19, at 9.25 p.m.j Admiral Sir Charles Madden told an audience at the United Service Institution that he was naturally surprised to learn of the Select Committee’s inquiry, because he read of it then for the firs., time. “ I thought that as lam the chief of staff I might have been consulted.”— A. and N.Z. Cable. Substantial reductions in the Admiralty staff can be made without impairing the navy’s efficiency, declares the Select Committee on the Estimates. After pointing out that, while the personnel of the navy decreased from 151,000 in 1914 to 102,275, and the number of ships in commission or on the reserve, from 618 to 394, the Admiralty staff increased from 1900 to 3026.
