As a result of Sir Roy’s win at Ashburton he will be peSaulisccl 71b in the Anniversary Handicap at Wellington on the opening day of the meeting. This brings his weight up to 8.12. Celerity II was scratched at 9.30 a.m. yesterday and Footfall at 9.55 a.m. for all engagements at the Wellington meeting at Trentham. The Government came out a good winner at the Auckland summer meeting, for the taxation for the three days amounted to £15,751 18s 3d, which was £746 more than the owners got in stakes. As a result of contracting a very bad cold some time ago, Carnot has developed trouble in the respiratory organs. Arrowmir has been turned out for a spell. It is reported that Young Lochinvar died whilst being shipped from Sydney. An exchange reports that while galloping before the recent meeting at Ellerslie Limited cut himself slightly. The wound gave a little trouble a few days afterwards, and it was deemed advisable not to run him again after the Railway Handicap. Limited had practically recovered when he returned home, and should be ready for Trentham, where he won the Wellington Stakes and dead-heated in the Metropolitan Handicap 12 months ago. Reports from the north state that Black Mint is not doing any strenuous galloping, but is being confined to long, strong work. He showed at Tauherenikau that he is returning to something like his best form, which he lost when he fell on the bitumen road at Trentham. Black Mint has hardly recovered yet from, that fall, but he is shaping well again, and will, all goiug well, start in the Wellington Cup, in which he will be ridden by R. Beale. S. Wilson has left the employ of the Trentham trainer, H. Lorigan, with whom he served his apprenticeship. Wilson is at present undecided as to where he will follow his calling, and he may finish up In the South Island with an owner who races very extensively. Up to the end of last jeason Kilbroney’s stock had won close on 170,000sovs in stakes. The imported mare Spean Bridge has been taken up north to race in the Douro Cup. Although Rteremoana has been allowed to drop out of the Telegraph Handicap, he is doing good work on the track. Mask and Damaris are both reported to be training on nicely since they were last seen in public. Overhaul is not a particularly good track horse and can generally be relied upon to shape better in a race than in a gallop. When galloped with Black Duke the latter always seems to be travelling more freely than the Tractor gelding, but Overhaul is the more reliable in a race. Ark Royal is referred to by northerners as a “ moody ” horse. That is not his trouble. He apparently .“pinches” himself, but this may bo remedied in the future. Kindle may be one worth remembering in connection with tho Wellington Cup meeting. She won in very convincing style on the final day of the New Zeaand Cup meeting, when she drew away ii) the Seymour Handicap to win by three lengths in Imin 26 5-bsec. The writer expects Staghunter to prove himself the best two-year-old of the seaeon. Booster is now in all probability a better horse than at any part of his career. Those in search of bloodstock will have plenty of opportunity to fulfil their requirements next week when over 100 yearlings and a large number of older stock will go under the hammer at Trentham. The stock on offer will require a good market to absorb it all, and some good bargains may bo secured during the week. Prior to leaving New Zealand the Perth Cup winner Phoenix Park was placed under offer to Mr W. Quirk at 700 guineas. Oratrix is one of the most likely sorts in training at the present time. Set Sail and Money Order is the favourite combination for the Wellington Cup and Telegraph Handicap. Probably one of the oldest horses in North Auckland is a bay gelding by Conviction. one of the first thoroughbred sires brought to Northern Wairoa. This gelding, which is nearly 40 years of age, is owned by Mr Bert Woods, and is at present in camp with his owner at Maule’s Gorge (says an exchange). The old horse, who still carries a good deal of condition, in spite of the fact that he has only four teeth, is still able to do a good day’s work, and carried Mr Woods’ brother, who is well over stone in weight, over 40 miles on a fishing excursion, and came home as fresh as a daisy. Rampion looked one of the likely horses to extend Limerick on his trip to Sydney in the autumn, but only if he stood up to racing, and now comes the news that nis one race during the holidays found him out. His trainer stated recently that there was little chance of Rampion being seen again in public. Rampion defeated Limerick in the A.J.C. Derby of 1926, and a meeting between the pair in the autumn would have aroused great interest. JJever lay odds on ” is the sage advice extended by many shrewd men who follow racing but with a presumed moral on hand men who would be regarded ordinarily as well balanced in betting matters are tempted, with the result at times they have to pay, instead of, as they expected, being in the happy position of receiving. A pointed illustration of an odds-on favourite going down when only one opponent had te be disposed of, is recorded from Melbourne. The Upen Handicap (six furlongs) run at tho Epsom meeting on December 51 was considered to be a “good thing” for Royal Joker, and it is recorded that after 400 to 100 had been laid on bis ability to win he started at sto 1 on. Rex Tertms, however defeated the favourite » easy 6ty in my notes last week I made mention (says attended the produce of a collection of mares 'imported from England to New Zealand by the late Mr J. F. Buchanan in 1917. Sparrow Hawk’s first foal was T’,c Hawk, and his winnings in stakes ?un out to over £22 000. Pineta threw Rapine in her second season,, and he won £2O 330 in stakes. Polymma s second foal was The Cypher, and his wl nmngs amounted to £6BOO. Per Armas fourth foal was Martarma, and he has so far won £2755, with the position bright for him to carry his winning total much higher before the season ends. The total sura involved in the purchase of the six mares imported from England by the late Mr Buchanan in 1917 was not made public, as four of the number were bought privately. It may, however, be doubted if any of the collection cost above a moderate figure. Polymnia made the best return, the four yearlings from her submitted to auction realising 3625gn5.
