SWIMMING.

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. Swimming enthusiasts and the public are promised a treat on Saturday and during the following week when the most important aquatic carnival ever staged here—the New Zealand swimming championships—wall be held at the Municipal Baths. The local swimming centre has taken no small amount of time and trouble to ensure the success of the meeting, and some splendid contests are anticipated. The carnival will commence at 2.30 on Saturday afternoon, and will be continued in the evening, and both sessions should be exceptionally interesting in view of the fact that included in the programme are the 100 yards men’s and ladies' national championships. The former especially is recognised as the “ blue ribbon ” of the New Zealand swimming world, and with such well- - cracks at Norman Dowsett (Wanganui), J. P. Farrell (Auckland), and D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury) competing the race promises to be one of the finest ever swum here. The ladies’ championship should also be interesting, as in it the Dominion’s four finest lady sprinters—Misses E. Stockley, I). Magee, K. Miller, and M. Jcpson—will he pitted against one another. Miss Stockley is the present holder of the title, and, as Miss Magee has recently done some remarkable trials, a stern tussle should result. Another event which should create more than ordinary interest will be the mile men’s championship, in which the public will have the opportunity of seeing D. P. Lindsay, the Canterbury crack, who is, without doubt, one of the finest swimmers New Zealand has ever produced. ST. CLAIR CLUB’S CARNIVAL. The St. Clair Life Saving and Surf Bathing Club held its annual carnival at the Municipal Baths last night, and, although the attendance was not as large as might have been expected, the events were followed with the keenest interest. A lengthy programme was swum off, and some excellent contests were witnessed. The relay handicap was an especially keen race as will be gathered by the time for the six laps—lmin 53 2-ssec—which works out at 18 4-ssec a lap. The 66 2-3 Yards Ladies’ Handicap also brought the soectators to their toes, and the race was noteworthy *for the splendid time recorded by Miss K. Miller, who swam the distance in 43sec, to tie with Miss C. Lang, to whom she conceded 13sec. The latter swam with her usual gameness, and put in a great finishing spurt. The attraction of the evening was the appearance of W. Cameron, the Wellington intermediate champion, and Jiose who expected great things of him were not disappointed. Swimming off scratch and conceding Bsec to the limit man in the 50yds sprint, he registered 24 l-ssec, which is undoubtedly the best time registered in a Dunedin baths. Standard time for the distance is 56sec. Considerable interest also attended an exhibition of backstroke and crawl swiming by Miss Ena Stockley, of Auckland, the holder of the New Zealand 100 Yards Ladies’ Championship, Results : 33 1-3 YARDS BOYS’ NOVICE RACE.
