STITCHES IN ART NEEDLEWORK.
The illustration shows twostitches which, if worked as directed, will give variety and colour to your work. Figure 1 shows
French knots and how to work and use them. French knots are used for filling in centres of flowers, dot markings on leaves, etc. To make, bring tho thread through to the right side of the material and hold it down under the thumb. Twist the thread throe or four times (according to the size of the knot required) round the needle between tho thumb and linen, still holding down tho thread. Put the noodle back to tho wrong side just behind the place where the needle came out at first, then bring it out at the exact place whore the next knot is required. Always hold down the thread as long as possible in order that the knot may bo quite tight. Figure two shows
what is known oa Faggot Stitch, and is an effective stitch for a decorative joining of two edges. It may be applied to bands, cushion covers, household embroideries, undies, anything in fact. Prepare the scams by placing the two selvedges or hems flat on to a still foundation of brown paper, about a quarter of an inch apart; secure tho thread on the loft upper edge, insert tho needle at tho lower edge a little to tho right, pull through with tho thread to tho right of tho needle, make a little stitoh, as in 2a; pull through with the thread under the needle. This makes a good firm insertion; a thick twisted thread is tho most suitable.
