SCHOOL VACATIONS.

OTAGO BOYS’ HIGH. The assembly hall at the Otago Boys’ High School was crowded yesterday afternoon on the occasion of tho annual breakup ceremony and the distribution of prizes—parents, old boys, and present boys fieing strongly represented. The chair was occupied by Dr G. E. Thompson, chairman of the Board of Governors. Dr 'Thompson remarked that the Board of Governors, which was a younger institution than the school itself, would hoiu its jubilee next month. He then went on to say that the time was coming when the ' school would be unable to accommodate Ml the boys, and, fine building though it was, it was unhappily impossible to enlarge it either vertically or horizontally. The department- had announced its intention of building a second boys’ high school South Dunedin, close to the Macandrew Road School. Only six and a-half acres )iad been provided, however, and this not being sufficient, an additional eight acres had been secured, partly out of the endowment funds and partly from Government funds. “ It is going to be, for the time being,” said Dr Thompson, and 1 hope for ever, a boys’school.— (Loud applause.) In my opinion, which I may say is not shared by all the members of the board, there should be no mixed schools for the main reason, among others, that boys and girls of adolescent age should be taught by teachers of their own sex, and that is impossible in a mixed school. Dr Thompson then introduced Mr J. J. Mallard, who was to address the boys and present the prizes. “ Mr Mallard,” he said, is one of the leading members of that very fine institution, which every visitor eulogises, the Old Boys’ Society.” Before proceeding with his remarks, Mr Mallard made reference to the death - of Mr E. R. Bowlex, an old boy of the school, who was chairman of the reunion dinner the old boys held during tournament week in Timaru. At his request the assembly stood it silence for a few seconds. The speaker then went on to say that there were three important events in the years of a school boy’s life —when he entered life, when he entered school, and when he left What was he going to do when he left? Some, of course, would go to the University to study on a higher plane some of the lessons they had been taught at school. They were not to think, however, that their education was over. “ You will find, as the years go by, that _ you are always learning,” Mr Mallard said, " and you will be surprised at what a little you know of the world and matters relating thereto. Your masters up to the present have done all they possibly can to enable you to follow the hundred-and-one pursuits there are in this world.” He added that the Otago Boys’ High School was a very young school—it was only 64 years of age —and he was pleased to say that the first boy to enter the school was alive and with them to-day. He was Mr Colin Macandrew.—>(Lbud applause as Mr Macandrew rose to his feet.) In conclusion, Mr Mallard advised the boys leaving the school to join the Old Boys’ Society which, he said, was going to be a tower of strength to New Zealand in the future. A hearty haka followed, and the presentation of prizes was proceeded with. The Chamber of Commerce prizes were presented by Mr J. Taylor (president of the chamber), who emphasised the practical side of education, and Mr VV. R. Brugh presented the Navy League prizes. The dux of the school this year is Thomas Caldwell Brooks, who joined the High School from the Macandrew Road School, of which he was dux in 1922. Brooks won both junior and senior national scholarships while he was at the High School, and two years ago he won the Herbert Webb prize for good work. He was a senior sergeant in the cadets, and was captain of the third fifteen and a member of the third cricket eleven. He was also a prefect, and one of the editors of the school magazine. The Otago Girls’ High School held its annual bi)aak-up and prize-giving cere mony in His Majesty’s Theatre last evening. Dr G. E. Thompson (chairman of the Board of Governors) presided over a very large attendance. The first part of the programme was devoted to an entertainment by the girls of the school. Several attractive items were sung by the choir, and solo numbers were given by Bertha Rawlinsqn, Dora Drake and Daphne Murdoch, while Dora Drake and Hattie Arthur sang a duct. Under Miss Taylor, the physical instructor, the Fourth Form gave a display of Swedish drill, and the Third Form girls went through some clever marching movements. Some more Swedish drill by the Fiftn and Sixth Form squads followed, and the entertainment was brought to a close by a pretty English sword dance by half a dozen girls. Tho more important part of the ceremony was then proceeded with. Dr Thompson, after referring to various changes in stair, introduced the speaker of tho evening, Mrs W. M. Benson, who, ho said, had been 10 years on the staff and four years professor of home science and head of the Home Science School. Mrs Benson took as her subject “ Loyalty,” making reference to tho loyalty of the Chinese to thoir relatives and ancestors, of tho Japanese to their king whom they reverenced, and almost idolised as the head of a largo family, and" finally of English loyalty to country. This word loyalty had a very wide meaning and it was the spirit of a national feeling that in tho past 100 years had developed admirable traits of character. The destiny of a nation depended on the thoughts and loyalty of the individuals who formed that nation, for all action was tho outcome of thought. It was the biggest question in the world to-dfcy, this loyalty to the home, to tho school, to the country, and beyond that loyalty to humanity at largo. Each form of loyalty grew out of the other and all were compatible with one another. Mrs Benson concluded by advising tho girls in the lower forms to stay on, if possible, and matriculate, for matriculation was a certiorate of general knowledge, which admitted to the majority of professions today. For those who did not care for teaching, she suggested the possibilities of ll'o homo science course and tho study of dietetics. Mrs Benson presented the form prizes and the spurts prizes, and tho Navy League prizes were presented by Mrs S. M. Bark The dux of 1927 is Madge Evelyn Martin, who is also the winner of the Anna P. Logan Stout Challenge Shield for the girl who shows best allround development i'll class work, sport, and in the social life of the school. PRIZE LIST.
