VEAL FROM NEW ZEALAND.

BRITISH AUTHORITIES SATISFIED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) BOND ON, November 5. Discussion in the newspapers of the Dominion concerning the killing of calves and the export of veal has found a repercussion in some journals in this country. Unfortunately, some editors seize upon such a discussion in a mischievous spirit, and, writing in ignorance of the facts, they are apt to do damage to the reputation of the Dominion. Apart from such mischievous paragraphs, however, a statement appears in the City Press, which, having an official origin, is worthy of note. In the course of a report on the subject of calves to the Port of London Authority, Dr Willoughby, Medical Officer of Health to the Port, wrote: “On September 5, a sample consignment of 30 bags arrived from New Zealand. Five bags were thawed out and examined in the Dock Store by an officei of this Authority. In each carcase examined the pleura was missing. The remaining 25 bags had gone to Nelson’s Wharf. Your Medical Officer requested the importer to have this veal transferred to a cold store within the City of London for an examination. This was done, and on September 9 your Medical Officer, with Dr Hancock, of the Ministry of Health, inspected some of the meat at Smithfield Market. This sample consignment was not acceptable from the point of view of ease of examination, and also from the fact that the pleural surface was stripped from each carcase.” It appears that no complaint.? have eve reached the Meat Producers’ Board, an certainly all consignments have passed tl medical examination on this 'idc. T) first regular con'-dgnmen consisting of 5bags (weighing from 1121 b to 1201 b eacc arrived on October fi by the Tarnaro: The Matatua brought 1034 bags, the Rim taka 377 bags, ami the Rnahino 190! bags. All these consignments have bee examined and released, and tint moat baboon bought up by the manufacturers. I therefore appears that the authorities her are quite satisfied with the produce, an no further criticism seems to be merited.
