Jan. 14—Ashburton County R.C. Summer. Jan. 21, 23—Foxton R.C. Annual. Feb. I.—Tapanui R.C. Annual. Feb. 23, 25—Nelson J.C. Annual. The weather was somewhat wild and wintry at 'Wingatui yesterday morning, when a number of horses were worked on the course proper. The trestles have been shifted to a position close 'to the inside rails, which provided better going than the outside of the track. If the weather ia at all favourable there should be a good attendance at Wingatui to-morrow, when the Oamaru Jockey Club will present an attractive card, which promises to provide some interesting racing. Overdrawn, Loughrea, Circulation, Haulage, and Tractor were amongst the horses allotted useful work at Wingatui yesterday morning. Rob, Streamer, and Delicious were companions in a six-furlong gallop at Wingatui yesterday morning, and they finished in close order in Imin 24sec. Streamer is likely to prove a bargain at the 30gns raid for him at the New Zealand Cup bloodstock sale. The Sutala —Roden filly Delicious is shaping fairly well in her work at Wingatui. She is a sister to Precious. The Oamaru Cup may be deprived ot some interest by the fact that Mr J- A. Ainge is doubtful about starting Pink Note in the race. t A poor field from a numerical point of view' is likely to be seen out in the Jumpers’ Flat, in which Toa laua and Thistlecrown are regarded as doubtful starters. This will leave a field of three to go to the post. Wingatui aiyi Miss Winkie were coupled in a good working gallop over 10 furlongs yesterday morning. . King Sol seemed to be shaping well at the end of six furlongs at Wingatui yesterday morning with Overhaul. The pair completed their task in Imm 24sec. Dismantle and her two-year-old sister. Assemble, ran over half a mile yesterday morning in 54sec. Assemble is shaping nicely,- and shows more quality in conformation than her sister Dismantle or a full brother in Overhaul. Money Mine beat Felony over five iurlongs yesterday morning in Imin 7 2-ssec. Comic Song and a companion were sjran out yesterday morning over half a mile. The gallop took place on the plough, and the Winkie gelding is now not so “ jointy ” as he was after his races at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Money Mine appears to have improved during the past couple of months. He has furnished and thickened out, and seems more buoyant when on the track. Armchair and Puff required Imm 8 2-ssec to cover five furlongs yesterday morning. , . Coastguard was too good for Olympia yesterday galloping over six furlongs in Imin 25sec. W. Cooper is to have the mount on Ars Royal in the Oamaru Cud. Nominations ciose to-day for the South, land Racing Club’s meeting. All the talk in sporting circles predicts a record meeting for the Southland Racing Club’s fixture. The programme completely overshadows the rest of those issued for the holiday fixtures in this part of the world, and it is feared that a number of horses may wait until they can be raced at Invercargill. Miss Trillion is being treated to a brief spell, and when taken up again F. Shaw hopes to see her speed carried over more ground than she has so far covered. T. Metcalf, who returns north next week, states that he is getting plenty of mounts at the northern meetings. He intends making Palmerston North his headquarters. Cartoon may make his next appearance on the second day of the Dunedin summer meeting. ' _ Reports from the south state that Celerity II is now a better mare than ever before, and she should run a good race in the Oamaru Cup. Martis looks particularly well at present. and with bis speed should help to make matters interesting in his race at Wingatui in the Flying Handicap. The Solferino gelding Rob has a really good turn of speed, but requires- favourable atmospheric conditions to assist his chance in a race. Battlement ran a good race in the Otaio Plate, when he carried 9.1 into second place behind Sir Roy. A repetition of his best form would make the Martian gelding very dangerous in the Oamaru Cup. which will be run to-morrow at Wingntni. Footfall and Paperchase have been shipped north to fulfil engagements at the Auckland Cup meeting. T. Green may have the mount on Rapier in the Auckland Cup if F. E. Jones has to get up on Footfall in the same race. A three-year-old filly by Lucullus from Lisp landed at Wingatui yesterday, and will join C. Christie’s stable. El Nido is improving, and gradually rounding into racing condition. She has had every chance to mature, and before the season ends may be found showing a reward for the patience bestowed on her. Beauty Light and Royal Saxon worked over seven furlongs yesterday morning. Oriflamb is showing improvement in his schooling lessons over hurdles. Satrap has done well since he raced at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Mr W. R. Kemball gave the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club 25 nominations for the New Year meeting. We want a few of Mr Kemball’s sort down this way. A personage very closely connected with racing and in a prominent position states that the trend of affairs denotes that very complete upheaval and its attendant scandal will be necessary before businesslike methods prevail in the control. He maintains (sajs “Vedette,” in the Wellington Post) that the only possible policy for the stipendiary stewards or the pertinent onlooker is that of “go-slow.” In the meantime the public outcry may become louder; and if it docs not, it is nobody’s concern other than theirs, for it is tiio public who pays. While racing affairs are not so bad as many people would have u= imagine—how could form work out so well as it does otherwise?—there have been instances where all was not as it should have been, and (says “The Watcher”) a good deal could be accomplished if the owners who annually comprise the majority of delegates to the Racing Conference, would take a hold step and listen to the advice that their president has been dinning into their ears for years past. Having the remeoy in their own hands an owner’s growl about the condition of affairs during the season is really a reflection upon his own intelligence. From Hawke's Bay comes the report of the decision of still another owner to retire from racing. • The Hawke’s Bay Tribune comments as follows: —“ An owner well known in this district of some 20 years’ standing has reluctantly decided to discontinue racing until such time as the control is in the hands of those it should and is supposed to be in but is not. H:s t/nnn now in work will race until the Hawke's Bnv Jockey Club’s summer meeting and then, if not disposed of, will pc turned out in the paddock, where ho will then know what they are doing. In conversation with a .pressman this gentleman stated that at one particular meeting nc did ask for an inquiry, but was politely told by an amateur steward to go away and plav trains, or words meaning the same. Racing at the smaller meetings in this island in many cases does not result in tho “ survival of the fittest.” but. in the survival of those who know “tho right wav ” and until such time as tho offenders are outrnled other owners will gradually drop out doo.”

TROTTING. FIXTURES. December 16, 17. —New Brighton T.C. December 17. —Oamaru J.C. (two events) December 26.—Ashburton T.C. December 26, 27. Westport T.C. December 26, 27.—South Wairarapa. Summer. January 3. —Westland T.C. Annual. January 3, 4.—S. R. Meeting (four events). Shadowland, the winner of the 1926 Derby, is again in work amongst A, J. Tomkinson’s team. Pan Yan is the ruling favourite for the Electric Handicap to be run at the New Brighton meeting. Taurekareka, Conciiff, Shine Soon, and William the Great are the most frequently mentioned horses of those engaged in the Mace Memorial Handicap. Ahuriri is the ruling favourite for the Auckland Trotting Cup. Swiftbine failed to settle down in his race at Wellington until all chance of success was gone. P. Riddle is not likely to make the journey to Now Zealand with Shiek, Happy Rosa, ‘and Native Prince unless he thinks that they can more than pay their way. He knows what is required in this country* The alteration in John Dees handicap for his engagements at the Oamaru Jockey Club's meeting to be held at Wingatui tomorrow, revives the question whether there is power to alter a handicap after it has received publication. . In one event at Whangarei (writes “ Orion ”) a driver seemed to be working in the interests of _ another _ horse, which, as it happened, did not win, but the one he was paying unwaranted attention to scored nicely. ~ , In Explosion the chances are that Mr M Moodabe, who gave four figures for the son of Nelson Bingen, possesses a pacer who will enter the best company later. At Whangarei (says the Auckland Star), in the Presidents Handicap, the chestnut met a lot of moderates—he was on 4.47 in a 4.50 class —and he won in 4.44 1-5. As a performance this would appear to be nothing to “write home about,” but there was really more merit in it than would appear on the surface. That Explosion is not nearly tuned up is apparent, and when his trainer. J. Shaw, has built him up and put the right work into him we may expect to hear of the chestnut adding good races to his already attractive record. A. definite decision has been made to establish at Wellington annual sales of yearling and two-year-old trotting and racing • stock. The movement that has culminated in this decision has been developing for the past 12 months, and was first suggested by the Manawatu enthusiast, Mr J. A. Mitchell, of Longburn. The sales will be conducted by Messrs Wright, Stepheuson, and Co;, Ltd., have already successfully established national sales of thoroughbred yearlings. The decision to centralise the sales at Wellington has met with the approval of leading breeders in all parts of the Dominion, as the same natural advantages that have assisted the success of the thoroughbred sales here apply both to breeders and buyers of trotting stock. Up-to-date arrangements for the conduct of the sales are to be made. Electric light parades to enable the youngsters to show off their paces will be a feature. The spies will be held in Wellington itself. , . . , Within the past three weeks the Auckland sportswoman, Mrs I. Sweetapplc, added two horses to her team, and she has already had the pleasure of winning a race with each. The trotter Great Change she and J. Shaw bought on the morning of the Waikato meeting, end the same afternoon he won a race. Ihrec weeks ago (says the Auckland Star) Mrs Sweetapple leased the hitherto disappointing but good-looking Bingen King. He raced in her colo..rs unsuccessfully at Hamilton, but on Saturday last he paced in good style, and instead of shirking his job in the Waipu Handicap he stuck to it with such grit that after he had worried Roamer till the latter was beaten be went on to have matters pretty well all his own way and won rather well from Dad s Hope. A change of stables often brings about an improvement, and mixing with Jewel Pointer, Amaris. and Direct Morning has possibly given him more heart. HAWKE’S BAY RACES. (Per United Press Association.) The following trainers left for tlio north to-night with their horses to fulfil engagements at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting:—T. H. Gillett, with Count Cavour, Satrap, and Money Order; H. Cutts, with Centrepiece, Front Rank, and Childsplay; P. V. Mason, with Agrion, Eulalie, and Golden Armour; H. Davis, with Footfall and Paperchase; G. J. Pine, with Don Jose and Paper Boy; H. Nurse, with Rapier; F. Christmas, witty Mar tar mu. This is in every way one of the strongest teams that has represented Riccarton at an Auckland meeting for a long time past. Some of the Auckland contingent were worked this morning, but only two of them were stretched out. Rapier was seen to advantage in beating Stormy over a mile in Imin 44 3-ssec, while Money Order went well in a live-furlohg sprint in Imin 3 2-ssec. On the score of condition the horses were mostly in the best of order when they left. Footfall is quite sound, and he will be hard to beat in his engagements. Rapier has done well since lie raced here last month, and though beaten soundly, by Count Cavour on Tuesday, his admirers seem in no way disturbed. Count Cavour is a ranch improved horse compared with the form he showed last month. Paperchase and Money Order are in fine fettle for sprint events. The Derby candidates—Agrion, Satrap, and Martarma —are all in excellent health. Likewise the crack two-year-old Childsplay. One of the tourists was under a cloud for a couple of days. This was Centrepiece, but his trouble soon disappeared, and if he goes on all right he will pay his way. Magna Clmrta was not included in T. H, Gillett’s team. He has progressed satisfactorily, but, as he is backward, it has been decided to wait till later in the season before racing him again. FORBURY PARK TROTTING CLUB. At a special meetming of the committee of the Forbury Park Trotting Club hold last night it was decided to change the date of the summer meeting from Thursday and Saturday January 26 and 28 to Friday and Saturday the'27th and 2Stii. The alteration was made in order fn give an opportunity to sportsmen attending the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, which concludes on January 25, to be present at the local fixture. NEW BRIGHTON TROTS. POSTPONED OWING TO RAIN. (Per United Press Associatic r.) CHRISTCHURCH. December 35. The New Brighton trots have been postponed till Friday owing to the rain.
