LABOUR IN QUEENSLAND

TRADES UNION CONGRESS. RETENTION OF STRIKE WEAPON. (Pies* Association—By Telegraph—Copyright ) BRISBANE, December 14. The Queensland Trades Union Congress decided to letain the strike weapon. A resolution was adopted declaring that arbitration and conciliation as a method of settling disputes shall not prevent workers exercising their strike right when neces sary. It also declared that the proposed council of railway unions was inimical to the interests of the railwaymen and unionists generally, and invited it to disband. A previous message stated :—A council of railway transport unions, representatives of station masters, traffic and maintenance employees, guards, shunters, signalmen, and salaried officers’ unions, and the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen of Queensland has been formed. The main object of the council is to investigate the circumstances and the reasons for declaring “ black ” any commodity carried on the railways, and to determine what action will be taken by the unions comprising the council should a dispute concerning “ black ” goods arise. It is estimated that the collective membership of the unions comprising the council is more than 60,000, and that is will have ample power to enforce its decisions.
