The annual break-up ceremony of the St. Kilda Free Kindergarten was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday afternoon.' There was a large attendance of parents and friends, who watched with interest the exercises and games of the children, under Miss Hancock, and listened with pleasure to their singing. During the proceedings the parents were presented with Christmas presents (made during the year bv the children) from the gailybcdccked Christmas tree that commanded a position of honour near the dais. A brief address was then delivered by the Rev. D. Heggie. HAWTHORNE. The Hawthorne Private School and Kindergarten, of which Miss A. L. Lees is the principal, held its breaking-up function on Tuesday night in the presence of a large gathering of parents and friends of the pupils. The report presented stated that the school opened on February 9, with an attendance of 30 pupils, which was a decrease on the two previous years. The aim was not, however, to have a largo school, but to keep the roll number at about 50 pupils. Miss Tilbury had supervised tho upper school during the first term, but had had to resign to pursue her University studies, and the vacant position had been ably and conscientiously filled by Miss M. Wilson. Three pupils had sat for their proficiency examination last month, and Gladys Gallon had gained a pass. Miss E, Smith had taken great interest in the school, and had taught the pupils club swinging, tennis, etc. The swimming class was not as large as might be desired. Tho physical culture and elocution classes continued under the supervision of Miss Aslin. The report concluded with an expression of thanks to several ladies for donations towards tho prize fund. The prize list showed that in Standard VI, Gladys Gallon was dux and had won the gold medal, and that Marjorie Lane bad been first in examination marks, and Margaret Henderson first for English and composition, A lengthy programme of very entertaining items was _ gone through very cleverly by the pupils, the young people being very warmly applauded for their 1 efforts. The items consisted of music, recitations, dancing, and physical exercises. The evening was a very enjoyable onu, and concluded with the distribution of the prizes. . R. S. REYNOLDS. The brightness and joy which pervaded the E. S. Reynolds Free Kindergarten yesterday afternoon on the occasion of the annual break-up was typical of the atmosphere always present at this institution for the upbringing of young cihldren. Mrs James Hutchison, representing the Free Kindergarten Association, addressed the parents and friends present, speaking of the good work done by Miss Dutton (principal of the Free Kindergartens), Miss Rata d’Auvergne (head teacher), and the students, and then called upon Mr Fleming, who made an interesting speech on the subject of chiy education. Songs and games were afterwards contributed by the children, who, in their party frocks and best party manners, charmed everybody with their eagerness to do their best, and their utter lack of seli-con-sciousness. The grown-ups left after receiving some mysterious parcels made for them as Christmas gifts by the boys and girls themselves. Later, tea, a birthday cake covered with candles, a Christmas tree laden with treasures, and farewell tokens of sweets and toys brought the function to an end, the happy faces of the departing small people proving that the kindergarten year could not have ended on a more triumphant note. RICHARD HUDSON. The proceedings at the Richard Hudson Kindergarten, which held its break-up ceremony in the morning, wore conducted on much the same lines, the speaker being the Rev. F. Fish. Mrs Phillips occupied the chair, and the children, under the direction of Miss Duthic (head teacher) and Misses Hayward and Urquhart. contributed songs and games. Presents made by the children during the year were then handed to the mothers, and the year was thus brought to a happy ending, ST. MARY’S, MOSGIEL.
