CITY POLICE COURT.

Wednesday, Decembeh 14. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew.) DISORDERLY BEHAVIOUR. Walter Thomas Heller and John Bernard Hill, two young men, pleaded guilty to having behaved in a disorderly manner on the Main North road on December 13. In evidence it’was stated that the two accused had gone into a paddock near the North-East Valley Catholic School, where they called out to some of the girls in the' playground. On the girls being called inside the men went over to the building, and, after trying to look through the windows, made themselves generally objectionable. They were both under the influence of liquor. Sergeant Boulton was communicated with, and the men were arrested.—Senior Sergeant Quartermain said that Heller had been released from gaol only a few days previously, and Hill was still ou probation.—The accused were remanded until the following morning pending a report from the probation ofli°Cr’ IN POSSESSION OF OPIUMA Chinese iaundryman, n med Chin Ham, appeared to answer to charges of being in possession of opium in a form fif for smoking, and of smoking opium.—Mr C. J. L. White appeared for the defendant, and Mr J. MTntosh, Collector of Customs, prosecuted, Mr White intimated that his client intended to plead guilty to the first charge, and counsel suggested- that, under the circumstances, the second charge might be withdrawn. —Mr MTntosh agreed to this course.—ln evidence, it was stated by the prosecution that Sergeant Lennon, on going into the defendant’s laundry, near Cargill’s corner, smelt opium smoke. Investigation revealed several opium pipes and an opium smoker’s outfit in a bedroom at the rear of tho shop. A small quantity of opium “ seconds ” was also found.—Mr White said that of tho four pipes found only one was an opium pipe; the remaining three were for smoking tobacco. The defendant had never been in trouble before. —A' fine of £5 and costs (10s) was imposed on the first charge, the second information being withdrawn. CONVERSION OF MOTOR OARS. Two youthful members of the now notorious “ Chevrolet Gang ’’ —Frederick Thomas West and John M'Gregor Wilson —appeared on remand to be dealt with on a series of charges of unlawfully converting motor cars to their own use, both having previously pleaded guilty. Mr d. M. Barnett appeared for West and Mr C. J. L. White for Wilson. —A charge of having with Allan Reuben Barnett and Alexander Hodges, unlawfully converted to his own use a Chevrolet car belonging to Cecil Hadcn Tait, was preferred against West, and Wilson was charged with having in company with Barnett unlawfully used three cars belonging to Stronaeh, Morris, and Co., Albert James Morris, and James Sanderson Hastings respectively.—Referring to the case of Wilson, Chief Detective Cameron said that shortly after the liquor had been stolen from Murray, Robc-ts’s store, Wilson met Martin, who was concerned in the theft, at a dance, and helped him to drink a bottle of whisky. Wilson knew that the whisky was stolen, and at various times had visited the place where the remainder of the liquor was hidden, with Martin. He was also in Martin’s company when Mrs Newberry’s car was taken in October, and a quantity of material stolen from it.—Both West and Wilson were admitted to probation for a period of 12 months, the conditions being that during that period the latter should abstain from liquor, and that the amusements, associations, and finance of both should be governed by the probation offiocr. A REMAND GRANTED, Charged with having stolen an overcoat valued at £7 belonging to Robert Sherriff Black, a young man, for whom Mr B. S. Irwin appeared, entered a plea of guilty, —Chief Detective Cameron asked for a remand' until Saturday morning, as further charges were pending.—Tho accused was ordered to be remanded in custody until Saturday, and Mr Irwin’s application for the suppression of tho name until then was granted.
