They do things in a hurry sometimes. An Auckland paper states that “ Princess Ronnie, who has only been in commission d couple of weeks, is coming on very fast." Sjhe will probably go off very fast. ’ At regular intervals stories gain currency regarding the existence, of a jockeys’ ring. JU report- of • that character is again in circulation in tho North Island. •.When Set Sail mot Centrepiece in tho (Jt.J.C. Handicap, the latter was giving rtjvay 81b. Centrepiece was in show condition, but the’: form ' appears to have been df-ceptod as correct, because in the Christmas Handicap Set Sail has to allow Centrojiicco 11b and come in on 91b worse terim fpr beating a fat'horse. Great Charter cleared out from tho field on that occasion and won with 7.6 in Irain 39 5-ssec. He flnirbed half a dozen lengths in front of Set Sail, who will have to meet tho three-year-oM on lib worse terras in the Christ mas Handicap. Sol Sail, of course, wen :C double at the Timaru meeting, but she was lucky to win on tho first day, and Great Charter did not appear on the scene. On paper Great'Charter should run a good race, as he is far more likely to improve than a six-year-old mare. ", Countersign finished third in the Fen dalton Handicap and well in front of Sot Sail. In the A.R.C. Christmas Handicap Countersign has been handicapped to meet Set Sail on 51b bettor terms than when they ran in the Fendalton Handicap.^ 'David Garrick cost TIOO guineas as a yearling. TROTTING. FIXTURES* December 15, 17.—New Brighton T.G. December 17.—Oamaru J.C. (two events) 'December 26.—Ashburton T.C. 'December 26, 27.—Westport T.C. December 26, 27, —South Wairarapa. December 26.—Gore T.C. 'December 29. Winton T.C. December 27, 29, 31.—Auckland T.C. January 2.—Waikouaiti (two events). January 2.—Wyndham R.C. (two events), January 2, 3.—Canterbury Park T.C. Summer. January! 3. —Westland T.C. Annual. January:3, 4. —3. R. Meeting (four events). ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. “ Wager ” (Kurow). A;- G. Wilson. Aceptancea are due tovlay for the Gore Trotting Club's meeting. The Nelson Bingen gelding Neerson was one of tho unlucky horses at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting. Ho Was handicaped at 3.42 and ran third in 3.36 2-5. Neerson is a five-year-old half-brother to Glenelg. Tho performances of the three-year-old colt Vestas , at Wellington were indeed gratifying not only to his owner and his trainer, but also to all admirers of a good youngster. It is to be hoped (says an exchange) that theson of Matchlight and Imperial Fan continues, to act properly, for that is all'that is required for him to win important contests. The following penalties have been declared in connection with the South Wairarapa Trotting Club’s meeting:—Wairarapa Cup: Bankhead 72yds. Gold Dial 36, Explosion 24; Clareville Handicap: Bankhead 96yds, and Explosion 24. The arrival of Shiek in Auckland will help- to arouse extra interest in the Auckland Trotting Cup. A reeprd price of 13,500 dollars for a three-year-old pacing filly was given when Hollyrood Jacqueline changed hands in America recently. This filly is great Groat Britton 2.3 J, tho latter a son of Mr J. R. M'Kenzie’a Peter Chenault, who is doing stud duty in Canterbury. During the running of the second division of tho Novice_ Handicap recently at Richmond (Victoria), Second Voyage, owned by Miss Walsh, of Essenden, showed signs of illness. A veterinary surgeon was called in after the race and subsequently • announced that the horse appeared to have been doped. . Trotting has a tremendous ‘ following in Germany, and at The opening meeting ou a new track laid down at Altonaer, each of tho day’s racing was witnessed by over 15,000 people. The track, which is a dirt one. is seven furlongs in circumference, and Bft wide, and is banked at each end fully 7ft to the outside. There are no races for pacers, but that there is no scarcity of trotters round Hamburg was proved by the fact that one event was run in two divisions, with 37 starting in the first and 43, in tho second. All the races are handicapped on the yards system, and speculation is by the totalisator only, investments being accepted from 5s upwards, and for a straightout win Or a place. Tho totalisator is worked on a different system. from that in New Zealand in regard to closing and balancing. The machine .closes automatically ■ when die starter presses a lever at tho post, but if a false start is recorded tho machine opens up immediately and continues business until the horses are finally sent away. The loading trainer is J. Mills, an American, and there is a big strain of American blood running through most of the horses. The Waikato Trotting Club, through its starter, showed its appreciation of J. Shaw’s enterprise in taking an extra horso to tho fixture last week for exhibition purposes, by fining him £1 for being late at tho post in the Mark Memorial Cup with Bold Bill. Tho driver, after the occurrence, made an explanation to the authorities that tho delay was caused through having to attend to Jewel Pointer, who was shortly afterwards to bo called upon for his great effort, and also having two horses to get ready for tho Cup. The committee seemed perfectly satisfied with Shaw’s explanation, but the find . was . allowed _ to stand. Considering that the trainer in question gave himself extra work by taking Jewel Pointer down in tho club’s interest to give the exhibition, it shows a poor return for the effort made to add to the -attraction of the fixture (says tho Auckland Sun). In the circumstances surely the fine could have been remitted. The above punishment is a more bagatelle to what followed the famous Ribbonwood-Fitz trial, which drew tho largest attendance ovei seen or likely to bo seen at Addington or elsewhere in this, country. On the final day of the meeting on which the match took place Ribbonwood again drew a very large crowd by. being sent against the existing record' for a mile. Ribbonwood .-rt-ent 2.9, and during the same day D. J. Price was disqualified for six months'for making way for a beaten horse. WAIKOUAITI RACES. (Pee United Press Association.) TIMARU, December 14.
