It was decided to inform these clubs that the matter was not officially before the association, but. that it was hoped in due course to back up any efforts made by the Australian Chess Federation to bring about the proposed visit. „ „ T rr, V The- Hon. Secretary (Mr C. W. Tanner) reported having given Mr J. B. Dunlop, of Dunedin, a letter of introduction to the London Chess Club. It is hoped that Mr Dunlop, who has thrice won the New Zealand championship, will be able to take part in the tourney that is to be held at Tenby, in South Wales, m July next to decide the British championCorrespondenco was received relating to the system of notation for telegraphic matches. The English notation was tried out during the past season, and the clubs are therefore asked to advise their delegates in time for the meeting in March next whether they wish the system re- , tained, or whether they would prefer to return to the Kieseritzky-Koll method, commonly known as the numerical system. The Canterbury Club suggested that the trophy for the club championship of New Zealand bo called “ The Janion Trophy,” as the late Mr Charles Janion in 1866 organised the match Nelson C.C. v. Canterbur C.C., which is understood to be the first telegraphic match played in the southern hemisphere. Mr Janion, who died on November 12, 1912, aged 81, at various times did much for chess in Dunedin, Greyniouth, Nelson, and Wellington. The Canterbury Club’s suggestion will come up for consideration at the association’s meeting in March next, by which time the various clubs will, it is hoped, have instructed their delegates as desired in the official report of the last annual general meeting. It was decided heartily to congratulate th© Otago Chess Club on winning the club championship of the Dominion, this being the first time that the honour has' gone to the South Island.
