(Received Dec. 14, at 9 p.m.) The United States Shipping Board to-day approved of the conference agreement between the Matson Navigation Company and five intercoastal lines providing for a joint service from the North Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico ports of call to Sydney at specified rates per ton of 20001 b, or 40 cubic feet, these rates not being applicable to packages weighing in excess of 67,2001 b. It is stated that arbitraries are to be charged in addition to the specified through rates on traffic destined for Australian ports beyond Sydney. The board also approved of the agreement by the American Hawaiian Steamship Company with the Transatlantic Steamship Company providing for movements of shipments on through bills of lading from the Atlantic coast ports of the United States to Australian and New Zealand via San Francisco or Los Angeles. A. and N.Z. Cable. AGENTS’ CONTRACTS CANCELLED. BOARD MEMBER ACCEPTS LOAN. WASHINGTON, December 13. The board adopted a resolution cancelFnt, the contracts between it and Swain and Hoy, managing agents of the Amcrica-Australia Orient Line, which operates several vessels between Australia, New Zealand, and the United Slates, on the ground that Mr W. S. Hill, one of the 'Shipping Board commissioners, iccepted a loan on a note from Swam and Uov. . , Mr Hill resigned yesterday, and I resident Coolidgo immediately appointed a successor. The resolution states: “In the opinion of the board the otter and the acceptance of such a. loan consitutes a grave impropriety." The board announced that the choice of new agents is to be made immediately. . Mr Hill issued a statement in winch m; said he never dreamed that the loan would be improper, and was extremely surprised when he learned that the agents of the Department of Justice were investigating the matter.—A. and N.Z.
