CHAIR OF DENTISTRY
IMPORTANT POSITION IN OTAGO UNIVERSITY. DR R. B. DODDS SELECTED. Dr Robert Bevan Dodds, who has been appointed to the Chair of Dentistry in Otago University, in succession to Dr Pickerill, was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School. In his senior year he was awarded the Chamber of Commerce gold medal for English and mathematics. In 1913 he entered the Dental School, Otago University, and graduated B.D.S. in 191 b, when he was also awarded the Lcask Memorial Medal for Operative Dentistry. Early in 1917 he became an officer in the N T ow“ Zealand Dental Corps, and saw service on both the hospital ships and in Egypt, being in command of the dentn> section during demobilisation there. During this period he was in intimate contact with graduates of other dentai schools, British and American. From October, 1919. to February, 1926, ho was engaged in the private practice of his profession in Nelson. r ihere he attended the public hospital in an advisory capacitv in dental and associated disorders,' and studied surgical pathology. In 1921 ho obtained'the degree of Doctor of Dental .Surgery, New Zealand University. In March, 1926 lie proceeded to the Denial School of Otago University, and shortly afterwards was made an Associate Professor nf Dentistry, and when (he resignal inn of Dr Piokerill look effect he was'elected acting dean of the dental faculty. For some months Dr Dodds has been acting professor of dentistry at the University and director if the Dental School. In July last ho eceivcd a testimonal from the students who had completed the course for B.D.S , in which it was stated: “The teaching if Dr Dodds has left nothing to be desired his lectures and demonstrations being of a lucid and instructive type, with > strong leaning towards the nraHieal tspects of dentistry, thus showing him to be not only a teacher lint also one who has understood the requirements of mtl made a success of private practice.
