(Peb United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, December 13. About 20 young men, habitues of the Rev. Jasper Calder’s dosshouse, which has been closed, humped their blueys yesterday morning and set out for the country in search of work. Most of them went south. HAWERA, December 13. A handsome shield has been presented to the Agricultural Department by Henry A. Lane and Co., 1-td., of London, through the Vow 'Zealand reuresenl.stive, Mr G. H. Buckeridgc, for the encouragement ot dairying a. id aaiuuiliuo among the youths of the Dominion. The shield is offered as a perpetual challenge trophy to be awarded each year to the pupils of the school gaining the most points in the various competitions, including those of A. and P. shows and winter shows. PALMERSTON hi., December 13. One ot Palmerston North’s oldest landmarks, a building which formerly housed the fire brigade in Coleman place, and was later shifted to Cuba street, and used until recently as the headquarters of the Manawatu Philosophical Society as a museum, narrowly escaped destruction when a fire broke out in it at an early hour this morning. The contractor for the erection of a new hotel and a confectioner had their goods, etc., stored in the building, the latter’s stock being mined. WELLINGTON, December 13. About 800 waterside workers attended a stop-work meeting to-day, and decided against unrestricted membership to their union, but favoured former members rejoining.
