MUSIC FROM THE AIR
A REMARKABLE INVENTION. SUCCESSFUL DEMONSTRATION. (Frees Association—By Telegraph—Copyright i LONDON, December 12. (Received Dec. 13, at 10 p.m.) Professor Theremin, who received the congratulations of Sir Oliver Lodge and other British scientists, gave a successful demonstration at Albert Hall.—A. and N.Z. Cable. A cablegram from Berlin on September 29 read as follows: —A remarkable invention, by which music is extracted from the air. was revealed by a deinontsration at the Bechstein Hall. It was attended by Professor Einstein (oyginator of the relativity theory) and many German professors. ' Mr C. 13. Cochran, the inventor, and Professor Theremin (of Russia) stood on the stage near a small wooden box, from which a brass rod Ift long projected. They merely vibrated their fingers in the air'as though playing on a musical instrument. Instantly a time was extracted as the result of the agitation of sound waves reacting upon the instrument. The scientists accepted an invitation to play an air, and every one of them succeeded in obtaining a tune, i The nearer the hand drew to the brass | rod the higher the notes, and the deeper | the tone as the hand withdrew. Certain notes were also produced by merely blinking the eyes and moving the muscle of (he fare at the right distance from the instrument. .Scientist' agree that the invention has vast possibilities.
