ORPHANAGE DAY.
TRAVELLERS ENTERTAIN CHILDREN.
A function, known as the Commercial Travellers’ Orphanage Day, was held last Saturday on the Caledpman Ground. The chi.dren from the various homes arrived by motor buses and other conveyances at 11 a.ra. They wore immediately taken charge of by the commercial travellers. Ten minutes later the children were supplied with footballs, full cricket sets, and skipping ropes. Then tho fun started. A sports programme was also run off, the winners receiving very useful prizes. At 11.30 a.m. the Mayor (Mr W. B. Taverner) visited the ground, and in a homely chat with the children expressed his pleasure at the arrangements made for their entertainment, and conveyed to them Christmas greetings. After a substantial luncheon had been served, the children were taken for motor ear rides round the ground for an hour. This pleasure was followed by a liberal helping of the ever-welcome ioe cream, after which further sports were held. At 4 o’clock afternoon tea was served, and each child was the recipient of a Christmas gift. At 4.30. 400 tired, but happy, children said good-bye to their new-found friends, and were conveyed back to their various homes with the promise of a similar day next year. This is the sixth or seventh occasion on which this function has been organised by the “ men of the road,” and by both the travellers’ organisation and the inmates of the orphanages the outing is looked forward to with the utmost pleasure. The travellers’ organisation extends its grateful thanks to the St. Kilda Band, which has, year after year, willingly given its services.
