BLUFF-STEWART ISLAND SERVICE. On Wednesday the tug Theresa Ward made her last trip from Bluff to Stewart Island before being laid aside to make w-ay for the new motor vessel Southland, which will take up the running this week After a quarter of a century of battling back and forward across the stormy straits the Theresa Ward will go into retirement, but she la known from Auckland to the Bluff by holidaymakers, who have made the trip to tho island in her. Wednesday’s crossing marked the final page in the history of the old sea warrior which has done her work so faithfully during her years with the Bluff Harbour Board. THE CITY OF CANBERRA. An interesting announcement was made by Mr F. T. O. Prinsep, a director of the Ellerman Lines. Ltd,, on the occasion of the launch of the City of Canberra, built lor that company by Messrs William Gray and Co., Ltd., West Hartlepool. This vessel is to be propelled by reciprocating engines driven by superheated steam. But tho owners have two other vessels under construction, one being a single-reduction geared turbine ship and the other a Diesel vessel. When these three ships are built they are to be employed on the same routes, and on similar sendees. Tho company will thus be in the position of running a competitive examination of three methods of ship propulsion, for which special menta are claimed by different schools of thought in marine engineering science. The experiment is an interesting one, for it'seeks to establish tho true data on which any just comparison of the merits of the respective methods can be made. The real teat in the end Is the performance of the ships as reflected m tho profit and loss accounts, not of one voyage alone, but of a series of voyage? under similar conditions. It may be some years yet before the results of this examination are known.
NEW AUSTRALIAN COASTER. Tho steamer Cardross, specially designed by Captain J. Patrick foi the interstate trade, arrived at Sydney on November from Aberdeen, Scotland, after a successful voyage. The Cardross is a fine etamp of cargo steamer, with a carrying capacity of 2000 tons. She is fitted with four hatches, two being exceptionally large, and the appliances for working the ship and for the discharge of cargo are up to - date in every respect. Other features include nine derricks, one being equal to a 25-ton lift. Of 1350 tons gross the Cardross was built by J. Lewis and Son, of Aberdeen, and is 227 ft in length, with a beam of 34ft 7in. fhe new steamer was brought out by Captain Drew, well knfiwn in Patrick and Co.’s service. He speaks highly of the new vessel. She averaged nine knots on the passage, and on her trial attained a speed of nearly 12 'ots. The Cardross left Aberdeen on Sep- % iber 23, and made the voyage out via Suez canal. A run of fine weather prevailed until reaching lOdeg. south, and thence the steamer encountered stormy and unsettled weather, which continued to let. 2R'io~ south. Throughout this rough spell +V- n nr dross proved herself a splendid eoa boat.
