BRITISH AND FOREIGN SAILORS.
MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The monthly meeting of the executive of the British and Foreign Sailors’ Society was held on Monday night in he Sailors’ Rest. Mr H. K. Wilkinson (president) occupied the chair. Sympathy with him in the recent loss of his wife was expressed. The Treasurer (Mr E. Beckingsale) reported the receipt of various amounts collected by Mrs Buchan, Miss Hears, and Miss .Johnstone (Port Chalmers). Gifts in kind from several firms in the city were gratefully .acknowledged. The Honorary Missioner (Mr W.Buchan) stated that seven oversea vessels had been in port during the month, but that most of them had coloured crews, >vith whom little could be done. About 170 visits had been paid by European seamen to the Sailors’ Rest, and the men had been hospitably entertained, and several services had been held for their benefit. Mr D. L. K. Walker (hon. missioner at Port Chalmers) stated that seven ships had arrived there, two of them being Norwegian whalers. The rest had been visited by 182 men, and social evenings and Gospel services had been held for them. The ladies of the executive reported that arrangements were well in hand for the entertainment of any seamen who might be in port at Christmas. Attention was called to the fact that both Sailors’ Rests badly needed repainting, and the hope was expressed that the requisite funds would be furnished by friends of the society and the seamen.
