A few days ago a motor ear belonging to Mr William Patterson, of Ardgowan, back-fired when the ignition was turned on after a hill had been negotiated and set the machine in flames. The car. which was insured in the South British office to. £IOO, was completely destroyed. ' PERSONAL. Mr Norrie Macdonald, a prominent Rugby footballer who was recently transferred to the Dunedin branch of Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., was presented oy the local staff of the firm with a handsome travelling bag as a token of the high esteem in which he is held. The reputation of the Peter Pan statue in the Oamaru Gardens has extended ar , and wide, and many visitors have come o the town for the sole purpose of seeing this masterpiece. The annual display of pupils' work m needlework, dressmaking, art, and drill in connection with the Waitaki Girls’ Hign School will take place on Friday afternoon next. The function is to take the form of a garden party. The school grounds are in excellent order, and a pleasant afternoon is promised for visitors. The proceeds of a sale of work are to bo n aid of the school swimming baths Lawn tennis will be indulged in and afternoon tea will be provided. The occasion i i one that has a particular interest for parents and ex-pupils, as it furnishes ocul ir demonstration of the splendid work that s being achieved at tins scholastic institution. MR AMERY’S VISIT. The Right Hon. L. S. Amery will reacti Oamaru on Thursday afternoon by special train. He wil] visit the Waitaki oo j l -' High School, and at 2.50 p.m. will be accorded a civic reception in the upera House. Members of local bodies wiH occupy seats on the platform, and it is expected that there will be a large attenddance of citizens, as. the occasion will oe unique in the history of the district. The Mayor (Mr Frank Crawshaw) will deliver a short address of welcome, after which Mr Amerv will reply. The distinguished visitor will then proceed by train to Dunedin. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. The list for the sitting of the Mag'strain’s Court in Oamaru to-day is comparatively light. On the civil side there are few cases, and the police sheet is confined to minor charges. CRICKET ASSOCIATION. At a meeting of the executive of die North Otago Cricket Association, it was decided that, owing to a misunderstanding having occurred in regard to the time tor drawing stumps, the match between Uaheno and Weston be played over again it was resolved that if arrangements car, ,oe made with the Otago Association, a match with the Southland Association he played at Carisbrook. Weston, at School; Albion v School B, at iakaro Park; St. Kevins y. Maheno, at Redcastle. third Grade. — Union v. Albion, at rung George’s Park; School A v. School U, at School; St. Kevins A v. St. Kevins B, at llcdcastle. OAMARU BOATING CLUB. The Oamaru Coating Club rowed two very interesting races at Friendly Bay last evening, there being a fairly large crowd of rowing . ithusiasts viewing the events from Holmes wharf. The display made by the various crews shows that active training has been engaged in for some time, and the indications are that a most successful rowing season will be experienced. The Novice Four Races resulted as follows: Roller's crew —Roller (s), Williams (3). Robins (2) Walton (b)—were beaten by Hjorring’s crew —Hjorring (s), Rennie, Aston, Crombie —by nearly two lengths. The second race was very willing. Rennie, as substitute for Roll, was very unlucky in not winning with his crew after leading all the way, being beaten at the post by Oubitt’s crew by the small margin of half a canvas. The crews in this race ‘ were:—C. Rennie (s). Firth, Patterson, Rodgers; Cubitt (s), Carrington, Cuthbertson, Corrigan (winning crew). COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTION. The election of a councillor to fill the vacancy in the representation of the Moeraki Riding of the Waitaki County Council by the resignation of Mr W. N icoison took place yesterday, and resulted in the return of Mr D. J Ross by a majority of 26 votes. The voting at the respective boths was as follows:r-County offices— Ross 7, Walker 5; Moeraki—Ross 11, Walker 20; Waianakarua —Ross 11, Walker 2; Hampden—Ross 38, Walker 30; Hillgrove —Ross 32, Walker 16;—totals— Ross 99, Walker 73. Mr D. J. Ross, the successful candidate, is a well-known settler of Hillgrove. He is vice-president of the North Otago Executive of the Farmers’ Union, and was one of the representatives of Otago on the Electoral Committee of the Meat Board. . .
