AMATEUR SWIMMING.
OTAGO CENTRE MEETING. A meeting of the Otago Centro of the N.Z.A.S.A. was held last evening; present—Messrs J. MTndoe (in the chair), E G. Janies, E. H. James, H. H. Henderson, D. Bannatyne, P. J. Priest, W. Jep son, T. Eogg, A. Knights, R. Hectoi, and E. Isaacs. GENERAL. A letter was received from the secretary of the Broad Bay Boating Club requesting the centre to control the swimming events to be included in the programme of the club’s annua) regatta on January 2.—The request was granted, and it was decided that Mr A. Knights draw up a programme of events, and to advise the club that Messrs Bannatyne and Knights would represent the centre and control the swimming races. . An application from the St. Clair Lite Saving and Surf Bathing Club for permission to hold a carnival on January 17, 1928, was granted, conditional on the club forwarding its proposed programme before the next meeting of the centre. Mr Hector said he considered printed entry forms should be provided on which intending competitors at future meetings could forward their entries, and that the competitors be asked to fill in on these forms their times in previous oerforraances. This would simplify the work o. the handicappers considerably.—Mr E. G James stated that such fonns were already in the hands of the printers. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. A letter was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Council stating that he had advised the Auckland Centre (in reply to an inquiry) that MisS D. Magee, who has recently returned from a holiday trip to Australia, wa- eligible to compete in the national championships. The President reported that he had ininterviewed a number of the city councillors and the town clerk id connection with extra lighting, accommodation, and dressing space at the municipal baths during the New Zealand champion ship meeting. He had also requested that mixed bathing be allowed during that period, so as to give competitors every opportunity for training. All of these requests had been granted with the exception of the one relative to extra lighting—Mr Henderson suggested that it might be as well to find . out what extra lighting would cost, and if it were not too much the council might not object to its installa tion, providing the centre made itself responsible for the expense. —The chair man’s report and action were approved, and it was decided to adopt Mr Henderson’s suggestion.—The Chairmai further mentioned' that he had tentatively suggested that corporation buses be placed at the disposal of competitors for observation tours and that there was every posai bility that the corporation would meet the centre in this matter.
