BEAR AT LARGE.
NO NEED FOR ALARM. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, October 20. Mild alarm was caused in part of the Ponsonby district this morning by the report that a bear had been at large all night, apd it was feared that the animal had escaped from the zoo. Later it was learned that the bear was of the harmless type known in Australia as the koala, much prized as a pet, the owner being Mrs Kadama, of Ponsonby road. In the early hours the bear was captured by a tramwayman, and was returned to 'the owner during the morning. Scarcely larger than an opossum, and grey in colour, the bear is about eight years old. It has been a pet for over six years, and although it is reported to have an unpleasant way of looking at strangers it is docile and tractable and fond o' tree climbi .g, with the eucalyptus for preference. It has a diet principally of gum leaves, varied occasionally with a taste of sugar. In Australia, where it is a native, the koala is commonly known as a “ teddy' bear,” and is a favourite with children.
