THE CHURCH ASSEMBLY

STRONG PLEA FOR DANCING. SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED. (Press Association —By Telegraph Copyright.) LONDON, October 6. (Received Oct. 6, at 9 p.m. ) , A challenge to the Church to change its attitude towards dancing was mad e by Sir Harry Vemey at the Church Assembly. He said that young people would dance, “ and good luck to them. Why shouldn’t they? Instead of assuming that dancing led down the primrose path to an everlasting bonfire, the Church should treat it as an art to be encouraged and throw open church halls to dancing. If it didn’t the public houses would be thrown open for dancers. Dancing at its worst ,was abominable, and at its best an old fine art. , . _ „ r , Coincident with this, Canon AA oods, speaking elsewhere, said; “It is up to the Church to throw its mantle over decent, healthy dancing. The Church should provide an opportunity for young men and women to meet in healthy conditions instead of allowing them to be driven elsewhere.”
